Hey guys I'm new here, but I've been reading threads on here for quite a while.

I feel the need to now post and have my own discussion with people because I feel as though my deadline(for lack of a better word) is quickly approaching and I feel almost lost in a sense. Some guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Well I'm currently in the first semester of my sophomore year, and I'm quite confused about many things. I may sounds like a "cookie cutter" here but medicine is just something I've always wanted to do and I honestly cannot see myself doing something else.

My grades thus far seem to be on the right track for success. As i read this site I always got scared, thinking I'm lacking in some areas, but as many here have said, I try to use it as motivation and it really helps. Here is some problems/questions arise.

When am i supposed to actually take the MCAT? I often hear junior year, but I feel as though I may still have to take some classes? I'm not exactly sure.

Also I don't exactly go to a great school will that affect my chances?

Last but not least are ECs! I'm fairly confident that what I'm in the process of doing so far is good, but is it enough? I have take courses to become a medical assistant and work in a hospital (pending certification), and I plan to shadow. Now I always see volunteering and research as common ECs, but are they absolutely necessary? I'm not opposed to doing them, just wondering.

Sorry this is so long, and thanks in advance!

You're supposed to take the MCAT before the time you apply. So if you plan on applying the summer after your junior year then that spring would be a good time. If you plan on taking a gap year then you'll probably need to take it your senior year.

As far as EC's go. They show your dedication to the profession. Show your leadership in an organization you really care about, and do some community service for the needy. These supplement your clinical volunteering and research (only do research if you want to and don't expect a pub. lol)

Do a quick search if you want to know around how many hours you should have.

and make your EC's fun! There are plenty of opportunities to find volunteer in things for your own enjoyment...leadership in the campus Italian Film Club is still leadership, volunteering at marathons or as a ref in little leage is still volunteering... (OK, those are weird examples, but you get the point.)
