I just found this website and I'm hoping it'll help me decide if the UGA program is good for me.
I do like the school a lot, but I see myself at this school and another so I'm trying to decide based on program. When I first heard about the animal health program, I was very interested, but I'm unsure if it's as good as a program as I first thought it was. Price of the university is not a problem for me, so i know some people say that anywhere is good for undergrad but i should go based on wheres cheapest and where i like it the most.
If anyone could just give me any info on the UGA animal health program i'd really appreciate it. I'm also OOS that effects anything.

I went to UGA and was initially in their animal health program. I ended up changing to biological science because the one issue with the program is you do undergrad for three years, apply to vet school, complete your final year of undergrad in vet school, graduate after the year with a Bachelor of Animal Science, and then finish vet school. Obviously this is easier said than done given how competitive the vet school is, I didn't even apply after my third year because I knew I didn't have a chance. If you're considering the program definitely have a back-up major in mind such as animal science, biology, biological science, exct. These majors would have a lot of the same course requirements and you would still be considered a pre-vet student by the university. I loved the program at UGA though you're going to have to choose relatively early on whether you want to go the Poultry Science or Animal and Dairy Sciences route. Unfortunately there are very few classes geared towards small animals (if you want to be small animal vet). I'm small animal and went the Poultry Science route, I'd say go Animal and Dairy Sciences if you're large animal, but definitely take at least a few classes from each department because they're all really interesting. I loved UGA and would definitely recommend it!

I'm more interested in small animal than I am large animal. And I was thinking maybe this program would give you an edge in veterinary school. it seems like thats not actually the case?

It definitely gives you an edge in that you have tons of opportunites available to you that come with having the vet school on campus, it just depends on which opportunities you take advantage of. The best thing you could do is get a job at the vet school if possible. The vet school people would know who you are and that you're a competent person. You'd also get a few opportunities to work with those vets with the pre-vet club. They also know the curriculum of the school and may be slightly more forgiving of not-stellar grades because they would know how difficult certain courses are.
