Now I realize there is an interview feedback section on SDN but it's mainly short answer format. I was wondering what happens during interview day (and in what order).. typically how many people interview at a time? Etc... Also, I noticed on the interview feedback section that half the students said it was a one-on-one interview and the other half said it was a group interview.. so which is it? I'm guessing like most other schools it's just a small office with a professor behind their desk, and just you on the other side? Also, for people who have interviewed, did anyone who interviewed get rejected or wait listed? Also, on that same note, did anyone who interviewed who had only mediocre grades/oat (e.g. 3.4/320 AA) get in? Just wondering.

Thanks in advance!

For the interview day, mine might have been a little weird because there were only two people other than me that day and they said that was a small group. That was back in October. I also think all of us had interviewed via phone with a retired doc, so that too threw it off a little since no one was interviewing in person that day. But I will give my best on what I know from my experience and others' experiences.

After checking in, you go to one of the classrooms for a presentation by Dr. Shulman - just general information about the college. Then you get financial aid information from a guy. Then you go on a tour of the college. After that, they feed you lunch and you sit with current students and can ask them anything you want. Then I think it's after that that people usually interview. As far as I know, it's just with Dr. Shulman. You aren't with other students - it's one-on-one with him.

From what I've heard, if you're interviewing, you are basically in. They just want to make sure you are comfortable and a people person. I know a lot of people they have not extended interviews to yet though because they tell them to retake the OAT or retake some pre-reqs before they'd be eligible. I have heard about someone getting an interview with stellar stats and then not getting in because they couldn't form a coherent sentence during the interview - so if you're not that type, then you're fine 🙂.

I've also heard that Dr. Shulman likes to ask some off the wall questions to see how you handle yourself. A common one I've heard from the past is why manhole covers are round. Obviously then too there are the questions about why optometry, why UHCO, etc. But the big idea is just to be comfortable and show that you are familiar with the field of optometry.

Last bit - they usually hand you your letter of acceptance at the end of the day if you get in. I'm not 100% sure that people who didn't get a letter the day of didn't end up getting in...but I don't personally know anyone who interviewed and didn't get accepted with a letter the day of the interview.
