So I've had trouble sleeping lately, with all the stuff thats happened in the last cuppla months not surprising. Looking for a little temporary relief, I get a script for Ambien from one of my homies...go up to the second floor of my house (first floor is gutted, I'm in N.O. this week), brush my teeth, pop the Ambien 10mg, sit on the bed, turn on the big screen thinkin' I'll watch a little Monday Nite Football before hittin' the hay. I glance at the clock. 9;30 pm.

Next thing I know I wake up...and I keep hearing this periodic "gzzzzzzz" sound coming from the bathroom...I look around...lights are still on, TV is on, computer is on...I look at the clock...0230...WTF?

I go into the bathroom and the noise is coming from my beeper, on vibrate mode, making the noise since its sitting on the bathroom counter...my wife tried to call me at 10:30 pm, I didnt answer, so she paged me.

I dont remember falling asleep...still dressed...awoke with spit all over my pillow...lights still on...didnt hear the phone ring even though it was right next to me on the bed...

Interesting aside is a buddy of mine told me Ambien gives you about 6 hours of good sleep...gave me 5...but the new one (Lunesta?) gives about 8. I was wide awake at 0230...eventually fell back to sleep but kinda the toss-n-turn kind.

Guess I'll take a half tab next time.

It's funny how we use all these meds on pts day in and out, having no idea how they feel or really work "subjectively".

I had toradol the other day. I had never thought much of it. It's "just an NSAID". God, it was awesome. Took away one of the worst HAs I've ever had in my life (not an SAH, really)

And no, I am not going to start trying all of them...

JPP, good luck with all your stressors!

hey Jpp

howd it make u feel ? this 6-8hrs of sleep, did u wake up refreshed or kinda groggy?

I thought of using AMbien or smething the night before my step 2, but decided against it cuz i heard there is some decline in memory. i just remember reading about ambien and memory loss somewhere for step 1 (actually i think it was the kaplan prof that told us that). But forget the memory, was the sleep restful? I really could use it when i need some zzz's before something important.

lol...DONT get addicted now JPP! 😉

Do not use Ambien unless you have the opportunity to get AT LEAST 5 hours, that is what the pulmonologist that gave me mine told me. I can attest to that. I used to work nights exclusively and had the hardest time sleeping during the days and then flipping my schedule around all the time. I used it for around 1 year and had to come off for couple of reasons....Mainly I felt I was getting stupid. Things were foggy alot of times and I did indeed have trouble recalling events and especially sequences of things I should have known.

Pearls of Ambien use:

See first sentence above. If you don't and try to function, it makes you appear as is if you are on the abusing pharmaceutical bandwagon. Forget trying to function in the medical environment and taking ambien on call and such..
Be careful with alchohol. 2 beers in stomach and pop an Ambien and you feel high as a kite and functioning is WAY off. Was at party the night after taking Ambien that morning for sleeping during the day and got the absolute most messed up I have ever gotten, with minimal ETOH consumption.
Onset is very quick as Jet mentioned. Don't get caught still in public or behind wheel with this drug on-board. Please be careful with your families.

Nice post...interesting your pulmonologist told you 5 hours...thats EXACTLY how long I slept (2130-0230)...and awoke and felt like I had slept longer.

MAN, talk about quick onset! I didnt know an oral med could act so quick. It was like I took it IV.

SOOO, from your post, RN, next time I wanna cop a BIG buzz I'll pop an ambien when I get up, take a 5 hour nap, and I'll be primed with synergy for the alcohol at the party that night!

Here's another party tip from my college days when C-notes were nonexistent: Go to the blood bank and donate blood, then go to Bennigan's for happy hour. One round of two-for-ones and you're buzzed; two rounds and you're wasted! All for about eight bucks (plus tip). Just make sure your buddy can drive, cuz you won't be able to......

UHH, OCCIFER, I CAN'T WALK! HOW ELSE DID YOU EXPECT ME TO GET HOME? <<<<<This is what'll happen if you drive!

Dood, you down 10mgs of Ambien with 2 16 ouncers in your stomach and you will have an experience like you have been in Jamacia toking on the finest red stuff available....Your vision will be about 1.5 seconds behind your head movement and things will be WAAAAAAY slow. I did this one night and had to crawl to bed, absolutley couldn't walk.

PS - Don't try to make out with the wifey with this stuff on-board, she will laugh her ass off at your slow-mo attempts and you will never live it down. Women are always complaining about men being so fast, you'd figure they'd like the change.....

You are right about onset. I had no idea a PO med could have such quick action. I don't know the pharm of it, but this stuff is QUICK.

You talked about escaping New Orleans - did the lifted Yukon XL with cold air intake, and big A tires help the escape all the water? I grew up in Georgia, I know how it is. Glad to hear you got out safely with the fam BTW.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Thanks for the post, dude. I havent laughed like that in 2 months.

Heres a funny... I took my wife's GMC Envoy to the hospital for the storm since my truck wont fit in the parking lot...which was fine since when we left we encountered no water...

which means my wife evacuated to Tylertown, Mississippi in MY Joe Dirt truck.....

lemme tell you something...it has changed her WHOLE perspective on lifted vehicles:

JET's wife, 72 hours after the storm, during our long awaited reunion: "Honey, I know I've dogged you for all the money you've put into your truck, and I know I make fun of it all the time, but I'll NEVER do that again!"

Turns out my Joe-Dirt-Lifted-YukonXL-on 38s was my families savior...they evacuated to Tylertown Mississippi, which got their fair share of the storm...and the nine-inches-of-lift along with the 38-inch-Nitto Terra Grappler All Terrains proved to be worth much more than I paid for them.

Its always good when your boss justifies your toys! Now I KNOW she won't bitch (too much) about my next project...Turbo Diesel Excursion, twelve inch suspension lift, 40 inch all terrains....."ok Honey, I'll wait 'til our house is restored"....

And thanks for your kind words, RN.

Ambien is great! I can't take the 10mg though or I hallucinate. I usually score the 10mg to save money....

For really quick onset, you can suck on them instead of swallowing, but they taste gross.

That sounded kinky. I was talking about ambien though.

IM Toradol and IM Valium after an MVA is fantastic! The next day the patient feels great.

Sonata dudes...sonata. No drug hangover.

I took an ambien when I was NYC. Thought I was going to go to sleep. My buddy comes in and and gets me all hyped up to go out. So I drag myself out, head to the bar, and grab a beer.

Next thing I am trippin my ass off. I'm leaning against the wall trying to get bubble gum or some sort of tacky stuff thats keeping my feet stuck to the floor. My friend walks up to me and says "man there isn't ANYTHING on your feet" and starts cracking up.

I just leaned against the wall for like 30 min. I couldn't even talk. Don't take it if you plan on staying up. Plus there is that anterograde amnesia thing. You'll never really know what you said to those people who are on your "dialed numbers" list at 230 in the am.
