Hello to all,

I got accepted to both, and am having a hard time deciding between the two... if anyone could help me out with any of their experiences and their opinions I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

This choice is easy. I also got accepted into LECOM and UHS but you cannot even begin to compare these schools. UHS is bigger and more facilities. The curriculum at uhs is more systems based and clinically enriched. The school is in a city not in some town that nobody knows about. UHS also has the highest pass rate out of all the osteopathic schools on the COMLEX exam . The pass rate is 97.5percent. The school is also big on research since they will be opening a brand new research facility to conduct clinical research trials on campus. These are just a few reasons to obtain your osteopathic education at UHS-COM. Good luck.

I don't know anything about LECOM, but I am currently at UHS. I am pleased with the education I had, and heading down to River Market or the Plaza is fun on your off nights. I am going into my number 1 residency choice in ortho surg. It has its problems like every school, but between faculty and facilities it makes up for them. My post probably didn't help since I have no info on LECOM, but at least I can vouch heavily for UHS.

2.5 months left woo hoo!

I am an MSIII at UHS and I must say that it is probably a good way to go. If you have any business interest at all UHS has the 4 year DO/MBA program. The city is nice. Not as much snow as Erie. Great facilities, great people, great faculty. Your education is really what YOU make of it, so the curriculum/COMLEX pass rate is not that important. But, I did enjoy the curriculum there. Go to UHS.

I was in your situation. Overall, I had a better feeling about UHS. Think about your future a bit, too. Are you OK with moving after the 1st 2 years to do your 3rd & 4th year? If you don't move, will you get a solid, quality education in either city?

I really like UHS. It's my first time living west of the mississippi. I grew up in Erie. Not completely awful, but...small. Not overly exciting. Not that you get much excitement in med school, but when you have the chance, I for one find it nice to have some bigger-city options.

Don't use the weather as a factor so much. KC's weather sux sometimes too (i.e. NOW!)

The LECOM folks were a bit snooty with me. UHS was open arms friendly, enthusiastic. But maybe that was just my experience. There are happy LECOM students.

Any specific questions, please feel free to PM me.
M.🙂

ps--and of course, good luck with your decision, and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

1. Is bigger nescesarily better? Maybe you would enjoy the more intimate atmosphere at LECOM. And our class has over 200 people, which isn't exactly small by DO school standards.

2. I find it hard to believe that you can compare your curriculum with that of a school you don't attend. LECOM's LDP pathway is entirely systems based and you get clinical contact in the first semester. I'm sure UHS is great, but I'm not going to say that LECOM is better, since I've never been a student at your school.

3. Do you plan on being involved in research while in med school? Two of my close friends actually work in a lab on campus, but most students don't. If you are interested in research, UHS may have the advantage there. Depends if this is really important to you.

4. Erie is in fact a city, although a small city. To claim that nobody has ever heard of it is absurd. Its not a metropolis by any means, but its not some rural farmland either. And for the record, I don't even know where UHS is. So apparently not EVERYONE knows all about this place either. It just depends on your personal experience and exposure.

5. If you want a big-city experience, LECOM offers rotations in Pittsburgh, NYC, Cleveland, Philly, Detroit, to name a few. You can move to any one of these places after second year. But you don't have to decide until the beginning of second year, so you get a chance to do some research on hospitals, residencies, etc before you decide.

6. Board pass rates. Thats a pretty subjective statistic, since its not really defined in anyway. Do 97.5% of UHS students pass the boards? Is this on the first try, or just eventually? Does UHS prevent students with low GPAs or other weaknesses from actually taking the boards? I don't know the answers to these questions, but I do know that sometimes statistics can be misleading. If 97.5% of the entire student body at UHS passes the boards on the first try, then you can't argue, thats awesome. But be careful taking things at face value, since schools are also businesses, and marketing is a big part of any school. This is true of LECOM as well...

Good luck with whatever you decide, I'm sure UHS is a great school too! I love LECOM, I have been given every opportunity I could ask for here, and most of my professors know me by name. I don't regret coming here for a second. I would urge you to go by how you felt at each campus and by hard facts, not the opinions of students. We are all pretty partial to our own schools, and sometimes people may think they know more than they do about other schools. Go with your gut. Good luck either way!

University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine is in Kansas City, Missouri.

...and there's no such thing as a pepperoni ball here!🙁

Now I know, thanks! 😀

Sorry to hear about the lack of pepperoni balls. Hang in there!

In my class the 97.3% pass rate is first time pass rate. 100% pass rate for my class after the second try. Ask the UHS Internet Ambassador for the most accurate info. I was the IA for UHS and he/she has access to the records both USMLE and COMLEX, not to mention MCAT avg. and GPA avg. Anyway, go with your gut and you'll get a good education from either school if you put in the effort.

Thank you everyone for your input!

I am currently leaning towards UHS...that was my gut feeling during the interview day. However, I did enjoy my short visit at LECOM, I thought it was a wonderful school and I loved Erie(although cold 😛 ). So the decision is a hard one.

Two questions to all UHS students: is the school located in a safe area? Any input on housing (Century Towers vs. another location)?

Hey

I interviewed at UHS and attend LECOM. Here's what I think. I LOVED UHS, but I just felt like LECOM was a better fit to me and home was just a short 3 hour drive.

I have to agree with hermione...

Oh and UHS is in the ghetto. Some of the students have their cars broken into while on campus...that's what I've heard.

uhs is not in the ghetto. its in a somewhat shady place if u walk around at night. but any big city has shady individuals walking around. i have heard about people getting their cars broken into occassionally but again, its smack dab in a major city, K.C. Also, it looks like they have stepped up security because when i was there their was security walking around outside. But This will happen in any major city. Lecom is in a small hole in the wall. If u dont like simple living youll be very unhappy at lecom. i heard some students say its a very small town and that u have to watch what u say and do if u are wearing lecom parephenalia outside the school because theres always someone around listening. but this was just one persons impression. Ive heard alot of dissatisfaction on this board regarding lecom. go with your gut, for me personally i chose uhs. But like others have said its what u make of it anywhere, if u have family or need to stay in the area im sure erie is fine, but for younger people erie isnt really a happening place, not to say K.C is the shiznit but it is a major city.

LECOM is not in a hole in the wall town. At least our campus doesn't have a 10 foot high security fence!

OK people, calm down. I have to agree with osteo emt that you do have to watch what you say around town. Am I overly paranoid about it? Not at all...but still, that's a drawback to the school. It's not something I knew about before coming here.

And let's be honest...Erie is not a hole in the wall town, but it's not that great either. It has everything that I need, more than my hometown, however, it wasn't necessarily the best place to put a medical school. You really wouldn't have time to enjoy anything anyway, but for my needs, it's more than sufficient.

What do you mean by watching out what you say around town?

As a UHS grad, I can tell you the quality of students coming out of UHS is fantastic. Anyone who wished to match into allopathic residency did so without difficulty, while others continued on the Osteopathic residency route at GREAT osteopathic institutions (Botsford etc).
I hold each of my former classmates in the highest regard and I know they will succeed in all of their pursuits.

Finally, after working with residents from institutions from all over the country (St. Louis U. to U of Georgia)...I can easily say that my training is absolutely on par with theirs.
UHS prepared me well.

One thing to consider is the personality of the schools. Decide which schools personality fits best with yours. Best of luck to you and congrats.
