I just wanted to see if I have any future classmates on SDN... I dropped off my deposit today and met some awesome people. I really can't wait for it to begin, but at the same time, I'm trying to figure out how best to enjoy the freedom I have left!

I wish I could say I was going to be a classmate with you at UIC (although after talking to my gfs sister the other day it sounds pretty rough)....we shall see. You can always go to the Midwinter ADA meeting at McCormick Place if you have the time in February. Do something fun...take summer off....get ready for hell. Anyway, I will keep you updated.

Hey,
I was just wondering what the chances of getting into UIC were after an interview.

depends on what time of the year (earlier is better). did you interview already?

anyhow i wouldn't bother trying to guess the numbers game. UIC is SO unpredictable when giving acceptances. you will be shocked at some of the students they let in, and shocked at some of the students they reject.

That's right. I can't believe they let me in.

That's right. I mean they let me in!

I just had the interview last week. I thought it went great, but who knows.

It is seriously driving me insane! I have a friend with stats not as good as mine who has gotten an interview in November. I know that I am not a craptastic applicant. I consider myself a fairly decent applicant, not the best but not the worst. Im an Illinois resident, woman, and a minority and I have yet to get a interview 😡 !

Grinningrice...I totally agree with you and this is my 2nd cycle...my father and uncle are both alumni of UIC Dental as well (not so sure that matters, however). I also know people in there with pretty mediocre numbers and some with astronomical numbers...UIC is a tough school to figure out.

Get used to UIC being completely disorganized. I haven’t been able to register for classes for two weeks because the University lost my immunization forms and didn’t make a copy! Now that’s bush….

In better news, I got pretty wicked grades this semester, so it is definitely doable here, even if you are a hardcore crammer.

I'll prepare myself for the disorganization... I've heard that the students tend to have a lot of complaints for the staff, but that, in general, everyone is pretty accomodating.

If you don't mind my asking, what are your study habits like? What routine worked so well for you? Thanks!

John,
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner, but I’ll try and run down my first semester classes here, hopefully it’ll be helpful.

Physiology - Easy class, probably going to be your easiest class first semester. It was at 8 a.m. mon-fri so I didn’t go that often. Just read the book, learn the material, and you’ll do well. Only buy the book if you don’t plan on going to class.

Anatomy – I got owned on the first exam (practical and written) because I went to a wedding out of town the weekend before the exam which was on Monday…whoops. But damn, was it an awesome wedding 😉 After that I got on it and, kicked ass. Study hard for anatomy, it’s the hardest first year class, by far. Don’t get behind or you’ll be screwed. I suggest buying the Netters atlas and the text is helpful if you like to read. The board review book is very good, too, and is much cheaper than the recommended text. Use the note co-ops for this class, they were very helpful when I studied.

Histology – Not too bad of a class, well taught, and straight forward. Our class finally figured out at the end of the semester that we could take pictures of the chotochromes that the profs showed during the review sessions (exactly the same ones they tested us on), and that was very helpful. The book was ok, but isn’t that helpful. I would suggest buying the Oral Histo book, though, it is good.

Micro – Micro was a lot harder than people thought it would be. The first exam was exactly like the old ones, but then a bunch of do-gooder d-bags in our class complained and they started to write new questions from there on out. Study hard for the second and third exams, and just memorizes everything that they fly through, especially immunology.

Biology of Human Dentition (BHD) - Not bad at all, work hard on your carvings and use the professors. I never really asked questions, but did well. Some people are going to be naturally more gifted at carving teeth out of wax blocks, but I just keep practicing and got much, much better towards the end of the year. Dr. Kolar is an awesome guy, and is a pretty descent lecturer.

Comprehensive Care – This was a super easy class, and I did well by just going. BUT, they changed everything around this semester for us, so it looks like it’s going to be a llittle harder. We’re starting operative and radiology this semester, so I’m assuming that it will be a lot different for your class. Just show up and do the work, and you should be fine.

Overall the first semester wasn’t horrible (second semester is going to suck, 25 credit hours). Stay on top of your stuff and don’t be a huge anal gunner. Most of the kids in my class who started out hardcore didn’t do as well as they thought they would…and ended up getting pretty burnt out. I was pretty laid back about everything, but studied hard on Mon-Fri, went out most Fridays and Saturdays, and studied hard on Sundays, and did well. I don’t want to specialize, but I can assure you that your class will be super competitive. The school overall is very disorganized, but I could care less. I taught myself a lot of stuff throughout the semester and met some awesome people, so I can’t complain too much. I have a few friends at other schools, and they seem to be much more organized and with-it, so to speak, but they don’t get to live in Chicago, so it’s a trade off. Let me know if I can do anything for you, and enjoy your last few months of freedom.

heh that's pretty funny. my personal experience was that i started school thinking i was the DUMBEST one in my class and was intimidated by all the gunnners, but now i'm sitting fairly good in terms of class rank.

Billiken: just a warning. in terms of the Board Exam Part I, you guys are SCREWED. a certain faculty member who will remain unnamed had the grand idea of making us take the exam before we even took all the classes necessary to prepare adequately for it. as a whole, we STUNK on the test. if you have any plans to specialize and are shooting for a 90+, you are out of luck!

Is that because they tried to cram in path during the summer? How is second year compared to first?

I would like to put myself in a position where I could choose to specialize if its something that appeals to me. I thought I had heard that the curriculum was being changed to accomodate this incoming class for boards, so that the material would all be covered. Is that not the case? And I'm sorry about the boards. When I interviewed, all the students were pissed about that. Thanks for all your help guys!

I think you're confusing med school w/ dental school. Only one dental school campus.
