I have an interview at UIC coming up (my first interview), and I was hoping that someone of you who have already interviewed there can answer some of my questions. These are kind of nitpicky, but I just want to get a picture of what the day is like, so I have some idea of what is coming up. Thanks so much!

1) Most people are interviewed by three interviewers. Approximately how many questions did each interviewer ask you (I know that will vary among applicants since some applicants talk more than others)? And about how long did you spend with each interviewer?
2) Where exactly did you interview? In a room with just you and the interviewer, in a commons room with other people around, or another place?
3) Who did you eat lunch with? Other applicants, faculty members, and/or current medical students?
4) How long is lunch?
5) About how many other applicants were with you for that half of the day?
6) Is there ample time to get to know the other applicants? Did you enjoy getting to know them?
7) Anything else that you want to share about your experience beyond the normal SDN interview feedback?

I'm an instructor, so I'm very accustomed to talking on the spot, but I still kind of have the pre-interview jitters since this is my first medical interview. I've been doing tons of resesarch on healthcare issues, the school, and bioethics topics, so I hope I'm not going too overboard! I know most people will recommend just relaxing the night before, right?

Well, thanks again!

hey man

where can i get some good info on healthcare and bioethics topics?

perferablly online, i'm always travelling so i have no chance to get books

I interviewed back in October but I will do my best to answer these as completely as possible.

1) Most people are interviewed by three interviewers. Approximately how many questions did each interviewer ask you (I know that will vary among applicants since some applicants talk more than others)? And about how long did you spend with each interviewer?
Each interview lasted about 30 minutes but it ranged from 25-35. In two of my interviews we just talked so I really don’t know how many questions I was asked. My first interviewer asked me why man hole covers are round so just go in ready for anything and answer as best as you can.

2) Where exactly did you interview? In a room with just you and the interviewer, in a commons room with other people around, or another place?
Each interview was in a room separate from the other interviewees.

3) Who did you eat lunch with? Other applicants, faculty members, and/or current medical students?
We ate with other applicants and current med students. The med students were those who gave us the tour and a couple that just dropped in.

4) How long is lunch?
Around 35 minutes

5) About how many other applicants were with you for that half of the day?
During the interview and lunch there were 16; during the interview session there were 8 of us.

6) Is there ample time to get to know the other applicants? Did you enjoy getting to know them?
yes, during the tour/lunch and while waiting for your interviewer to come get you.

7) Anything else that you want to share about your experience beyond the normal SDN interview feedback?
Have fun, stay relaxed… it is not an overly stressful interview. Both of my faculty interviewers were alumni of UIUC. One of them took similar classes to what I was taking. We also chatted about the fighting Illini… find common ground with them if you can; rarely will it hurt you.

Here's an excellent resource that I came across. But just remember these few guidelines. A doctor should inform, guide, and never do anything illegal.

It was a panel and each interviewer asked on average 2-3 questions.. the interview was about 30 min. I liked this type of interview because I wasn't drilled by just one person, rather I had different types of questions which was nice.

2) Where exactly did you interview? In a room with just you and the interviewer, in a commons room with other people around, or another place?

Rockford: It was in a room with a large table, I sat on one side and the three interviewers were on the other side.

3) Who did you eat lunch with? Other applicants, faculty members, and/or current medical students?

I had the afternoon session so I didn't have lunch.

4) How long is lunch?

N/A

5) About how many other applicants were with you for that half of the day?

about 15, but there were only 2 guys!

6) Is there ample time to get to know the other applicants? Did you enjoy getting to know them?

There was some time, but we were kept busy during our visit.

7) Anything else that you want to share about your experience beyond the normal SDN interview feedback?

I had only one ethics question and no healthcare questions. I think they just want to see if you are who you say you are, just like in most interviews, and they want to see if you can give a semi-intelligent answer to their questions.

Hey dragonfly,
just about what nimer said in his/her post abt the questions. I interviewed at chicago in oct but they didnt ask any of the people i was with about manhole covers... I guess the point is that they wanna see that you can think on your feet and have some kinda problem solvin ability. Anways... like nimer said, relax establish common ground.... and I think if you search thru SDN you will see this; but if you are in the afternoon interview, know the M3s or M4s who are eating lunch wiht ya, coz they might interview you. Relax, good luck! I thought of the interview as being a situation where I had nothing to lose, since i had no medical school acceptance b4 the interview and the worst thing is I still wont after, so I got nothing to lose !!! laterz! 👍

I agree... the guy was an ER doctor and I am sure he wanted to see how I reacted to something that I had not prepared for. The worst thing you could say is "I don't know."

Good luck to you! 👍
