UIC (RMED - Rockford)
Pros
- Good reputation
- Good clinical experience (hear there are no residents to compete with in Rockford)
- Possibly better research opportunities/connections with larger UIC system
- Lecture-based instruction (would be more familiar with this than PBL)
Cons
- Possibly less on-site resources (smaller campus and not hospital-based)
- Primary care focused

SIU
Pros
- Possibly more on-site resources (based at larger hospital)
- Earlier clinical experience
- Have impressive match lists
Cons
- PBL only instruction (I'm just unsure here... seems people have mixed feelings on PBL in general)
- First year in Carbondale (don't really care for Carbondale)

Overall, I'm leaning towards UIC. Seems that the larger UIC system could be helpful with research and connections. Also really like the people and program. The main thing that I'm hesitant with is the primary care focus. Currently, I am interested in primary care, but I know interests often change during medical school. I know students do match into other specialties, but I'm not sure how this program would affect your chances. I just don't want to close any doors before I start.

On the other hand... I've heard very good things about SIU. Their students seem to love the PBL, however I don't have much experience with that style of learning. I keep going back and forth and would appreciate any advice. Thanks!!

UICOM far and away, assuming cost is similar. Bigger reputation and will have plenty of resources for you to build a competitive app if you so choose.

If you’re fine living in Rockford, then go for it. Internal medicine is primary care but often people do fellowships after for the many subspecialities that require an IM residency.

Are you locked into doing something in primary care with Rmed? If not, def go UIC.

No, you are not locked in. That is just what is emphasized and what most students do.
