Hi,

Although I have not been officially accepted yet, if I do get into UIC (hopefully), I am trying to decide whether I should do room and board there or commute. I go to UIC right now (undergrad), and I commute everyday (1 hour each way). I take public transportation, so I get to study on the bus and the train, but studying while commuting is not as efficient as studying at a desk indoors (especially when it is freezing outside).

What do people at UIC think? As an undergrad, I have grown kind of neurotic about grades, so getting lower grades would take getting use to. Are grades even that important in pharm school? (as in, does it increase your chances of getting a retail job)

Hi rleung! I think you pretty much answered your own question about whether or not you should room and board or commute. It is a lot more convenient to study at school since the walk time to and from your classes are shorter. If you dorm chances are, you wouldn't be late to class either from traffic or weather conditions. If you're concerned about the cost about room and board, there are ways around it. Loans are always available, you just have to choose wisely in with interest rates and repayment schedules that suits you best. The cost of your dorm room will be nothing in comparison to doing better in school, getting to class on time, and having resources for you to study with (library, the sanctuary!). Good luck!

The cheapest dorms at UIC are about $5000 for the school year. As many of us say at UIC Pharm, Cs make degrees. The retail companies ask one thing, "can you get a license?"
Just remember to take the Pink Line to Polk St. instead of Blue Line to Medical Center.
