Just a quick poll here. I was just accepted to Iowa a few days ago. The question is would you rather go to Iowa as an OOS or UIC as an in-state student?

Pros/Cons of Iowa:

I went to undergrad here and I love the campus and the Dental school a lot. 🙂 I also would be living in my current apartment across the street from the Dental building so I'd literally walk out the door and be at school practically. The biggest downside is that I'd have to pay tuition OOS. But you'd be surprised to know that Iowa OOS actually doesn't seem to be that much more than UIC in-state!

Pros/Cons of UIC:

Chicago!! Location is one of the biggest pluses here because there's so much to do in the city! 😀 However, I'm also aware of how busy I'll be with school for the next four years. I would qualify for in-state tuition which is a huge plus but with the Illinois budget crisis, tuition is projected to increase more over the next few years (I've heard 10-15%?) . Factor in the expensive housing situation and UIC IS seems neck and neck with Iowa OOS as far as expenses go. :scared:

As you can see, I'm pretty biased toward Iowa, my alma mater. Cost is the biggest factor keeping me from immediately choosing Iowa however. What would you do? All thoughts/opinions are greatly appreciated! 👍

What is tuition for UIC? OOS tuition for iowa?

Iowa is 252K for everything (not including housing). UIC hasn't posted any of their tuition/fees breakdown yet which makes things very frustrating when trying to crunch numbers. I saw the info from last year though, and I believe it will be somewhere around 220K for tuiton/fees (also not including housing). Housing in UIC would narrow the cost gap a little but 30K is a considerable amount!

I neglected to mention that I meet the qualifications for residency in Iowa (but haven't applied). Declaring residency will make a HUGE difference, but I'm worried about being unsuccessful and losing Illinois residency.

Go to the cheaper school.

Do the math. Save the money. Go where you pay less overall. Nothing else matters. Nothing.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the advice. I've decided to go to Iowa! I'm so excited, it really is a dream come true!

Did you just accept Iowa, or earlier? It just seems like a long time and late in the game to have a lot of time to decide between 2 schools. Anyways.. great choice. see ya there
