I am debating between UIC and Rush on ranking and I am trying to make as informed decision as possible so if you know anything about these programs, please let me know. My impression of these programs are:

UIC: Pros - Based on my interview experience, faculty seemed nicer and residents happier. Not as heavy work hrs compared to other Chicago programs. Cons - Old facilities. Not as highly recognized compared to other Chicago programs and not much networking (might hurt when applying for fellowship unless you are ok staying within)

Rush: Pros - The name carries more weight (helps when applying for fellowship/job). Nice new hospital building. Cons - Heavy work hrs, residents didn't seem as happy (might be a malignant program?).

Sounds like an accurate assessment. Don't forget that UIC is pretty weak on hearts and trauma, so if you're looking to do those things, that may be a consideration.

Hello,

I have members on my team that trained at both programs. Both will train you well, and you will be a competent anesthesiologist at the end of residency.

In regards to Rush, the caseload is definitely heavy and work hours can be long. The main con that former grads have told me is that the didactics are weak compared to other programs. This can translate into difficulty passing the written boards, but that essentially comes down to one's own preparation.

UIC has a wide breadth and depth of experience and is very resident-friendly; the didactics are a strong suit. In terms of hearts and trauma, UIC residents rotate through Christ Hospital (a Level One trauma center) which has one of the busiest heart programs in the area, and also at a local hospital over the border in Indiana for additional cardiac experience. In addition, the residents also have an optional ECHO month where they gain experience reading echo's with the cardiologists. The main con for UIC is a lack of a national reputation. Overall quality of training is definitely not an issue.

Both programs will prepare you quite well to be an attending. My advice to you is to rank which fits you better. Best of luck!
