UIC vs. SIU!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I chose UIC over SIU based on location.

School is going to be school regardless of where it is. Chicago simply offers more than alton in terms of things to do. A lot more actually.

The ADA has its headquarters in the city, the midwinter meeting is held in the city (students are invited and can volunteer to work if wanted), your networking potential is expanded by simply being in a saturated area.

Really though, it doesn't make much a difference education-wise. Just go where you want to live for four years.

Others may diasgree, but very few people attend more than one dental school, so any comparisons will be pure opinion (as is this post).

Congrats on getting in, and good luck with the decision.

ps. I also prefer DDS over DMD.

I used to live in Alton; it is a suburb of Saint Louis, so you will find plenty to do if you end up at SIU-SDM.

I agree with Chrono... but I am a UIC alumni so I am biased. Anywhere you go you will get the education... enjoy where you live for those 4 years. Alton may be nice, but I can't imagine that there's as much to do as there is in Chi-town.

I am a student at SIU and I will say that Alton is not nice. I personally feel that the town sucks. I live 25 minutes from the campus and St. Louis is only 20 minutes away.

If you can put up with the location, the education is seriously worth it. Really prepare you for both written and clinical board exams. Usually 8-10 of 50 go on to specialize, if that is your thing.

Chicago definitely has more to offer in terms of city and things to do. I don't know much about the level of education, but I am sure it is good.

good luck

openwdy22,

I am interested in SIU as well. Hope you can help answer some of my questions. What year do you take the 1st board at SIU? And when do you first see patients? Do you have lots of patients down there?

Thanks, openwdy22

I am a 4th year SIU student.
If I were to compare the two schools I would say that SIU has newer and better clinical facilities.
Also SIU scores higher every year on both parts of the National Boards than UIC. Last year SIU was second in the nation for part II, and my class was fourth for part I.
Lastly SIU is a smaller school where you can get a wonderful education.

But I could be wrong....UIC people tell us why your school is better 🙂
