Ortho first vs. GPR then Ortho

Hey everyone! Trying to decide if I should apply for ortho straight from dental school or do a GPR first, then apply for ortho. This is because I'm from the New York metro area & intend to stay here, and all of the hospital-based (paid) ortho programs require a 1-year GPR. I want to have the chance to get into a paid program and not be forced to pay tuition for ortho, and the only way to open that door for myself would be to do a GPR first.

What do you all think? Pay $120k-$250k (private loans due to OBBB) on top of dental school, or GPR then apply to paid+low tuition programs after?

Agree with @Pablo Sanchez. Ortho is going to add on significant debt with private loans and the Ortho job market is not good. Go out and practice dentistry, save, invest money, and then if you still desire it, go back and specialize down the road. You'll not only be in a better financial position but also be a better clinician overall.

Your ortho residency could end up costing a lot more than 125-250k. Are you sure you need to have a GPR for all the hospital based programs? Thought it heard of others doing them without a GPR.

That being said, the ortho outlook is getting awful as some of the others have stated.

General is looking awful as well. with all the new dental schools opening up? The entire dental field looks to have a pretty bad future.

But I'd say screw the GPR, and just apply to ortho programs that don't require it. Do a GPR if you don't get in.
