I am currently a high school senior and an aspiring physician. I am looking at all my options for undergrad and am wondering if completing medical school prerequisites and obtaining a a bachelor degree from that institution is smart. I'm really anal and tend to over think things I have no idea about so I'm looking for someone who's been there and can give useful insight. I've been hearing that UIC's premed program is extremely competitive and they weed out many medical school hopefuls. I don't want to be in a competitive environment, not because I doubt my self, but because I know I work best in a limited stress environment and competitiveness won't work in my favor. So my main focus of this post is; If going to UIC for my premedical studies is a smart route or should I rethink it and look at other options.

What do you mean by extremely competitive? I feel like it's how it is at many other state schools, where there are literally thousands of pre meds during first year but the number drops significantly after taking bio and gen chem. As long as you have all of work in order and maximize the time you spend on your coursework, esp. for your premed reqs.

What are your other options right now; are you considering other state or private schools or maybe even smaller liberal art schools?

What do you mean by "weed out"? Do schools kick people off their premed status? At UVM you don't need to apply for premed and you don't get kicked out. Everyone goes through the process even if they have a 2.5 (if they want to). They just get lower recommendations.

He means weed out in the school is probably harder for pre-meds.

Like UChicago and Cornell are known as pre-med weed out programs because it's so difficult to get a 3.5+ in those schools

Ohhhhh so essentially they discriminate against premeds?

Not necessarily, it's just that the Pre-Med prereqs are science and math courses, which, is more difficult at these schools as nothing is graded on a curve, which sucks, and they have a negative to no grade inflation.

Ahhhh like purdue.

it's not a weed out school; it'll just feel like that because almost everyone here is a pre-med
if you pay attention and keep track with all of your coursework, especially your science classes, you'll be fine
