Hey y'all,

I am in desperate need of advice.. I have been accepted to UIWSOM, ARCOM, and WVSOM and have an interview on January 20 in Pikeville.

I live in Texas and had to put down a $1200 deposit at UIW because I hadn't heard back from other places, but now that I have options I'd like to reconsider.

Ultimately, it's between UIW and WVSOM- both have an ~80K COA. The reason why I haven't been thinking about ARCOM is because it is a new school with 8-5 mandatory lecture attendance and it hasn't accumulated any data to show its progress. I know San Antonio is new as well, but it's 3 hours away from home. I'd like to come back to Texas for residency and a lot of individuals have told me to stick with UIW in that case, but even then I'll be competing with 12 other Texas schools.. Do y'all think staying in Texas has an advantage?

I figured if I was going to pay ~80K for medical school, I'd go to the more established one? I have to pay a deposit for WV on January 20, but that's also the day I interview at Pikeville. Is it worth going to Pikeville for an interview? How do Pikeville and WVSOM compare? Pikeville is cheaper lol

UIW Pros:
class 8-12
p/f
close to home

Cons:
I spoke to one of the students and the curriculum doesn't sit well with me
Essay based exams- how do you all feel about that?
Mandatory volunteering 4 hours a week- student said this was very unorganized
Socratic style teaching
Not many research opportunities

WVSOM Pros:
Established, more structured curriculum
Felt the faculty support

Cons
Far from home
very small town

My list is longer, but I really just want to get this posted and get feedback. Please forgive me if any of the information I posted is wrong. Thank you!

I personally would choose against UIW for these reasons alone. Essay exams are simply stupid as every important test you’ll ever take will be MC, and mandatory volunteering is a huge time sink. Medical school is hard enough without you having to try and work studying around mandatory crap.
