Deposit deadline approaching - deciding between UIWSOM and ACOM
Hi all,
First, I'm obviously grateful to be holding two acceptances from these great schools. However, as the deadline to make a deposit is approaching, I need to pick one of these two schools all while waiting to hear back from my #1 in-state school. Here are some info/factors about each school that I'm taking into consideration:
ACOM
* slightly more established (founded in 2010)
* 60k tuition
* located in Dothan, AL: a small, suburban town known for being peanut capital
* traditional lecture based pre-clinical years with mostly optional lectures
* pre-clinical knowledge exams are board-style 100% MC questions
* graded curriculum all 4 years with class rank
* has history of matching competitive specialties, including all of ROAD specialties and even neurosurgery
*board-sources provided: UWORLD (useful for USMLE Step exams), Pathoma and Combanks
* deposit required: $2000 by the 14th
UWORLD
* newer private school (founded in 2015)
* 62k tuition, slightly more expensive than ACOM but still comparable
* located in San Antonio, TX - one of the few DO schools located in an urban area
* group-based learning pre-clinical: large and small group sessions 3x week but no traditional lectures - most days would be from 8 am to noon on average
* P/F with no class ranking
* pre-clinical system-based exams have 2 blocks MC and one block of free response (i.e. short-answer/essay-style)
* matches in most specialties except derma, opth, and ofc nsx and most matches are in Texas
*board resources provided: TrueLearn only
* deposit required by Dec 14th: $1200 (exclusive matriculation fee of $1000 later on)
For context, I'm out of state for both schools and have no ties to either of them. As of now, I'm interested in semi-competitive specialties like radiology. Please help me choose between one of these schools!
