Prospective students in the United Kingdom
Prospective students in the United Kingdom are advised to carefully check that the institution they are planning to study at is one of the 27 UK medical schools. Medical qualifications obtained from any other UK based institution are not recognised for registration with the GMC.

This is a thread (as agreed with mods) for all discussion of squatter schools in the UK. Please do not post in the UK+Ireland Forum unless talking about real, approved schools (ie: in the UK the 32 listed above)

Maybe Azsceptic would be good enough to give us an update on this topic. As I understand it St Chris has imploded and the (mainly American and Canadians who were rejected from their own medical training systems) students are now scrambling for options.

As a UK Medical student I'm happy this stain on UK clinical education has been removed but my heart goes out for the parents of these kids who have spent, or helped them borrow, 100,000s of dollars to giving them that second or third chance to "live the dream" of being a doctor.

The GMC has said it won't recognize their "degrees" but will these places still be able to operate on UK? The point of these businesses as I understood it was so little Johnny could say he was "going to Medical School in England" before he got that Family Practice or Internal Medicine Residency in the US.
While St Chris is no longer recognized by ECFMG what is to stop St Chris II (and III apparently) setting up shop and selling the same con? Stopping these places from operating as businesses is clearly beyond the remit of the GMC so do we need new legislation to tackle this issue? Should we be writing to our MPs?

I'm sure if someone sent up "Ivy League Medical School" Inc. of Boston then the authorities (and Harvard students themselves) would come down on them like a ton of bricks. There will always be those failed applicants with more resources than ability/capacity for hard work who are willing to pay through the nose for the "respect" of being mistakenly associated with a decent place and for an easy backdoor into medicine. Surely it is up to the authorities and real medical students to call out this activity when we see it?

Just my 2c.

As well as Azsceptic, I'd be interested in what other UK medical students think of this.

hi, can anyone tell me how is dentistry at University of Warwick? I want to apply for MSc in dentistry there.
