What kind of program did you/will you do to get your Pharm.d?

Options:

1. 6 year route-Started pre-pharmacy and then professional pharmacy work work right after high school

2. 2+4 year route-Started pre-pharmacy work at college/uni. then applied to a Pharmacy school

3. Bachelors degree-Get a Bachelors degree then decide to apply to Pharmacy school

4. Other..??

I started college at a community college with no idea what I wanted to do. I eventually majored in biology and graduated with an A.S. I am now at a four year state school and will graduate this May and attend pharmacy school in the fall (I hope). I am a little older then the normal student as well, since I started my college career later.

I can't imagine going for your pharmD right after high school. I would not change the life experiences waiting to go to college afforded me for anything. I am so happy to be pursuing my pharmD now though because I have put a ton of thought into it and I know it is what I want to do.

Good luck to everyone who is applying and attending pharmacy school. It is a tough journey but so worth it in the end. As Machiavelli would say but probably not exactly like this, "the end totally justifies the means" 🙂

I might be biased, but I personally feel that the bachelor's degree is essential. If a PharmD is to be taken seriously as a doctorate-level degree, in the next 5 years I believe a bachelors will be a requirement.

All of that aside, I wouldn't trade my bachelors degree for anything. Not only were these some of the most important formative years of my life, but they gave me the opportunity to work in the professional world prior to pursuing further education. Not only will my work experience serve me well in my career as a pharmacist, but it has given me invaluable perspective on working life.

I agree with Pharm47. Obtaining my BA gave me more experience as far as academics. I was exposed to other areas through my required GE courses. I think that's why people respect doctorate degrees that much more because they assume a person went through a bachelors first to get it. They see it as a higher higher education degree.

I also hope traditional 3-4 year Pharm D programs requires a bachelors within the next 5 yrs. Perhaps those 0+6 schools can also work out a BA/BS-Pharm D program where a bachelors can be awarded also. After completing my science pre-req's, I was roughly 4 classes away from a BA in general biology so I know it's not that hard. But who knows.

I suppose I would fall into the "other" catagory since Auburn requires three years of prereqs? I know it's close to the 2+4 route, but not quite. I suppose the school is gearing up for the inevitable transition of requiring a BA before beginning pharmacy...

Yay, for 2+4.
I'm doing perfectly fine without a bachelors. That bachelors would have cost me an extra 30k and 2 years.
The reason for the increase of people with bachelors is because pharmacy has become more competitive.
That being said, some of us 2+4 students, feel like we are the last of a kind. At UIC there is a rumor that in the next catalog it's going to put a date on when Bachelors will be required.

personally, I think doing 4 years of bachelors with 4 years of proffessional pharmacy work is just insane!. but I did find out most of the bigger schools on the east coast are offering the 6 or 2+4 year route.

I guess I would be considered "other". I don't have a bachelors degree, but have 3 years of undergrad. Thankfully, I don't have to do anymore undergrad. For me, doing my prerequisites was more about doing as much as I could as fast as I could. I really wasn't hoping to obtain any life changing experiences while completing my undergrad courses. Being 30, I already have experienced enough to know where I am going in life. Bachelors degrees are great, I just don't think it would have made a huge difference in my situation. Hopefully, I will do fine in Pharmacy school without one... I will soon find out. 🙂

For me:
Bachelors in Biology + Masters in Biology + 7 years at a pharmaceutical company and now - hopefully a career change (that I can't wait to start, but I need to get accepted first.....🙄 )= "other"?

I guess I am an "other":

B.S. + M.S. + 2 years as a chemist while finishing prereqs = pharmD candidate
