I will be doing a lit review for EM conference on bedside ultrasound. I would appreciate it if you could inform me on the following 2 questions.

1. What types of ultrasound machines are available in EDs that you have worked at. (Parkland's ED has a B-K "green machine" and a Terason 2000 "laptop" while Children's of Dallas ED has a Sonosite Titan)

2. Approximately how often/how many attendings use bedside ultrasound in the ED?

Thanks,
Andy

Sonosite Titan and an older machine that basically sits around.

About 80-90% of attendings.

We have 3-4 Sonosite Titans in the ER and one larger, more expensive Phillips.

Almost all do FAST and the "usual" exams, some are more skilled and do line placement, gallbladders, OB, etc. The people in the U/S program do nerve blocks, musculoskeletal exams, and all kinds of fancy stuff.

2 Sonosites and 2 Alokhas, 80% of attendings use.

Sonosite 180's/Titans, a half dozen or more, and all the attendings use them.

I'm in love. 😱

4 Sonosite Titans and 1 older machine (stays in one of the Trauma Bays)
95+% attendings use them
probably 5-7 attendings use extensively

Using an ultrasound machine and being credentialed by the hospital to use it as definitive studies are 2 totally different things. Some hospitals/programs have a much more stringent QA process.

To answer the questions..presently 4 faculty are credentialed to use with all supposed to be working towards credentialing in the next 7 or so months.

HDI 4000 - used for the majority of the scans
Sonosite 180 - used in traumas
Sonosite Titan - used for some scans
Sonosite I-look used for IV access.
