Hello everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for everyone starting at UMaryland next year to discuss any concerns we have about places to live, classes, etc. Congrats to everyone and I can't wait to meet all of you!

Does anyone know if we need to take collect teeth for UMaryland. I know that some schools require you to collect teeth.

Thanks!

Do you know if Maryland allows out-of-students to reclassify themselves as in-state students for tuition purposes after the 12 months?

I'm pretty sure we don't need teeth. We need models of our own teeth and two 4 inch tiles.

Any of you guys testing out of biochem? When they say you need to have taken graduate level biochem, does that mean it has to be in grad school or "grad" level from undergrad?

Hi Presidental,

I'm going to try to test out of Biochem. I think it has to be a grad level class but it shouldn't matter if you took it as a grad student or and undergrad.

Are you planning on studying for it in the next couple of weeks?

I'm pretty sure you will NOT get Maryland residency after a year. You would a )have to be married to a Maryland resident who pays taxes etc.
b) show proof that you live in MD other than for educational purposes

There are a couple more but these are the two biggies. I know that some states let you adopt their residency if you bought a house/state car tags /lived there for a yr and so on, but not Maryland.

Hi,

Has everyone gotten the financial aid information from UMaryland saying how much you can get in federal loans? I haven't gotten any information from financial aid yet. How much in loans is everyone planning on getting for living expenses? Did anyone have to get private loans?

You'll have to check your SIMSWEB online account to get your financial aid info. They stopped mailing financial aid stuff early this year (saving the trees... who knows) Anyway, it's all there, registration status, classes, money offered etc.

Hey all, I'm a MD resident and UMB is definately my first choice. I'm applying right now with a low GPA (2.97) hopefully the DAT will be good. Any advice on getting in/interviews etc? Thanks!

Thank you for the information 🙂 I was waiting for financial aid to send me something. I forgot about SIMSWEB...I guess they mentioned it to us during the interview. Thanks again!

Hi,

My advice is for you to apply as early as you can. And definately study very hard for the DAT. You will need a very good DAT score to balance out your GPA. When are you planning on applying? And make sure you submit the recommendation letters, etc. that Maryland requires. I got myself into trouble because I didn't submit a recommendation letter from a chemistry professor. They are pretty strict about the requirements I think.

Again...apply as soon as you can. Even if you are not ready to take the DAT--finish your application, send in all your recommendation letters, etc. Then you can fax your DAT scores right after you take the test and the official score report takes less than 2 weeks to get to the school.

Good luck :luck:

Hope to see you soon at UMaryland 🙂

I read on Maryland's web site that out of state tuition is $13,460 a year. Is that right? Heck, if that's the case, the out of state tuition there is better than alot of in state tuitions elsewhere.

I think that's per semester. The out of state tuition is about $31,000 a year.

hey, this is probably a dumb question, but i was dumb enough to throw out the original letter explaining anyway......what kind of locks are we supposed to get? Three locks with keys? combination locks? What are they for, anyway?
Thanks!

I think the locks are for our lockers and drawers in the lab. I think they are supposed to be locks with keys. I will look at the letter tonight and let you know.

parking is 4 bucks/day. jesus. the garage isn't even that close to our building.

Hey all, congrats on choosing Maryland!! I'm a rising second year and stumbled upon this thread (don't check SDn much anymore) and thought I'd put my 2 cents in on your questions:

-teeth: We got a letter summer before 1st year from Dr. Bradbury saying that we needed real teeth. We didn't use them and I'm 90% sure it will be the same for you all. You WILL hover need real teeth for 2nd year pre-clinical lab, so no harm in getting them now. Fastest way to get teeth is to go to oral surgeon.

-biochem: I think I remember Dr. Basherelahi saying that no one has ever passed his biochem placement test....good luck 🙂 I think he won't even let you take the test if you didn't take a grad level biochem course.

-locks: 2 are for your preclinical lab cabinets and 1 is for your locker. My advice is to get locks with keys as opposed to combination loack....faster to open and you'll have to carry around other keys that they give you anyway.

good luck all!! 🙂

SpringHaze,

The letter says it should be 3 regular size key locks. See you next month🙂

Does anyone else have information about other garages we can park in that are close to the dental school but is cheaper than $4/day? That's a lot when you are not making any money!

Thanks

Hello Everyone,

Is anyone else planning on taking the place-out exam for Biochem? I e-mailed Dr. Bashirelahi about getting access to the class notes on the internet but I haven't heard from him yet.

If you are planning on taking the exam...maybe we can all study together.

There are a couple of alternatives for the $4/day parking garage. There is the lexington street garage for $33/month. It's a little bit of a walk, but some of us could use the exercise 🙄 Another less pleasant alternative is to park at the Park n' ride in Catonsville, next to UMBC. It's free and the free shuttle stops close to school. I think the third is the DASH. I can't remember specifics, but here's the parking website:
http://www.parking.umaryland.edu/commstudent.cfm

RSXer, we need to hit the golf course before school starts. When does school start for us anyways?

Any hoo, to the rest of you wondering if you can place out of Biochem...it ain't gonna happen.

The bright side is that biochem with Dr. Bashirelahahahlallallahee isn't that bad. He's a really nice guy. Just remember to maintain eye contact with him at all times during lecture. That way he thinks you understand the material. However, if you pretend that you're reading your notes or highliting vigorously during his lectures, he will pick on you and humiliate you in front of everyone. Trust me on this. He has eyes in the back of his head and no one is safe during his lecture. Also, a good trick is to band together with other members of your ethnicity so that he'll get confused. For instance, all the Asians should sit together in a tight cluster and all the white preppy types should sit together. (This will not work if white preppies and white mormons sit together)
This way, he may think that he's called on you already for the day and pass over you and instead call on one of your comrades twice in a row thereby compounding that individual's embarrasment while leaving you unscathed.

That's the main bit of advice you'll need for 1st semester.

Hello Everyone,

Two more weeks until our welcoming reception! I'm so excited! Did everyone RSVP for the welcoming reception?

Are you guys buying books online or are you waiting to buy them from the bookstore?

One of the second year students told me that I should wait until class starts to buy the textbooks because we don't use some of them at all.
