wassup umass boston students....

I was considering an junior-level transfer into a biology program in Boston for family reasons. I can't afford any of the Boston private schools. Can any of you give me some thoughts on how hard it is to get in, What its like there, and anything about the different programs. Thanks in advance.

It's very easy to get in. Most of the people that go there commute from home (I don't think they have dorms or something). The ones that I have met from the school do not like it very much. I don't know about the actual programs because I've never looked into going there. If you cannot afford Boston U. and have great grades, they will give you tons of scholarship money. They gave me an offering for near-free schooling, as did the school I'm going to now (see below). I would apply to both of them just for the heck of it

im taking summer courses there. its a gorgeous campus in the summer at least. the facilities arent amazing. kinda like an old public high school. i take physics there and took calc II before i dropped it. i think its very demanding program, certaintly no walk in the park. i attended what some would call a prestigious small liberal arts school and i feel like from physics alone that umass boston has similar high standards as my school. so be prepped to work hard. i certainly am.

as for prestige and what med schools think of it. i really dont know.

oh yea cafeteria food gets old and greasy. however the main building at umb is prettier than any building at my school haha and our tuitioin is like prob 4-5 times yours and you are getting the same rigor and academic prep. i heard there is no grade inflation there either (DAM dont you wish everyone got A's?)

im a fan of grade inflations as a premed. oh yea dont let me scare you and say that the courses are hard, maybe im just stupid or dont like working hard in the summer. heh

Just to chime in with DrBruno: Definitelty apply to BU and some of the other area private schools. BU especially is known for offering tons of scholarship money. A lot of people from my high school went there because it turned out to be cheaper than going to the UMASS schools. You never know if you don't try, so give it a shot.

Tufts also has a pretty dang good endowment, which means more money for student financial aid...and don't forget about BC either. You should definitely apply to all, just to make sure. Plus BC, BU and Tufts are in much more fun and cool parts of Bean town than Umass. Best of luck

Big Correction: Boston College and Tufts are not even in Boston.. and both areas are suburban (a.k.a. not fun areas at all). I would apply to Tufts because they give plenty of money, but BC rarely gives out scholarships. Apply to BU, Tufts, Northeastern. One is bound to give you tons of money if you have good grades.

P.S. It is not DrBruno. It is DrBuro
