Hey,
I am planning on starting at Umass(Dartmouth) Research Psychology Masters program. I just wondered if anyone has experience with this program that can provide me with their thoughts about the program. Basically, anything you can tell me about the program would be appreciated.

Thanks all

I work in the area, but have more interaction with graduates of the clinical psychology masters program (which leads to LMHC licensure in MA) than the research program. Some of the faculty overlap the two programs, and in general I had heard positive feedback about the clinical psychology faculty and the department in general. UMD has a fairly good reputation locally but I can’t speak to how well the research folks do after graduation. I would ask the program to get you in touch with alumni to see what they thought, especially if you plan to pursue a doctorate afterwards, if you haven’t already. I will tell you that there was a situation I heard about with the soon-to-be graduating clinical students a couple of months ago that made me question the integrity of the faculty, but I have never worked in a faculty capacity so maybe how they handled it was similar to how other departments might have handled it. It took me by surprise because most of the graduates had positive things to say about the clinical masters program.

If you are moving from outside the area, be aware of housing and what neighborhoods (in adjacent places) to avoid. I can’t remember if there is on campus housing for grad students.

If you have the ability to relocate closer to Boston, the programs at BU and Brandeis are better known. That said, if UMass Dartmouth is all you have, that is better than nothing.

Thank you so much for providing me with some information. Is there any neighborhoods you recommend staying away from? I was looking on the school website for off campus housing and I found a few in New Bedford.

Definitely not New Bedford :laugh: But if you must, look at NB/Dartmouth line. South Dartmouth. There are 2-3 apartment complexes in Dartmouth as well. (Dartmouth Woods had a major fire in one of the buildings several years ago, so ask questions). Good luck.

It’s a pretty easy commute, even from Providence, so you have some options. New Bedford and Fall River can be rough. I commuted daily to Fall River and Westport from Southern RI (North Kingstown) and it wasn’t a bad drive.
