Before anyone panic, a quick lesson on accreditation

As posted on the US Department of Education website

"There are two basic types of educational accreditation, one identified as "institutional" and one referred to as "specialized" or "programmatic."

Institutional accreditation normally applies to an entire institution, indicating that each of an institution's parts is contributing to the achievement of the institution's objectives, although not necessarily all at the same level of quality. The various commissions of the regional accrediting associations, for example, perform institutional accreditation, as do many national accrediting agencies.

Specialized or programmatic accreditation normally applies to programs, departments, or schools that are parts of an institution. The accredited unit may be as large as a college or school within a university or as small as a curriculum within a discipline. Most of the specialized or programmatic accrediting agencies review units within an institution of higher education that is accredited by one of the regional accrediting commissions."

So for undergrad, most likely you want to attend a program that is accredited by a "institutionalize" accreditation agency - most likely a regional accreditation agency (in the case of UMDNJ, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education). Being regionally accredited means the school has been peer-reviewed by fellow institutions and found to be in compliance with certain pre-determined standards.

For specialty such as medicine, osteopathic medicine, law, dental, etc - you need specialize accreditation by specialty accreditation board. For MD it's the LCME (liaison committee on medical education), for DO it's the AOA, for the law it's the ABA (american bar association), for dental it's the ADA. These are the important accreditation to have if you want to practice in a profession.

So if UMDNJ should lose it's regional accrediation from the Middle States Commission, its status as an MD and DO granting institution will not be affected and its graduates will have attended an "accredited medical school" and will be eligible to be licensed. Now if you get your bachelor, MA/MS, or PhD from UMDNJ while it doesn't have regional accreditation, then technically you graduated from an unaccredited school.

Yeah, I don't like the sound of this! I hope UMDNJ gets its act together....SOON :luck:
