UMDNJ bound

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i am a 4th yr med student at Newark. i'm also going into anesthesiology, but at Northwestern.

first off, congrats on the match. as for housing...i wouldn't live in newark...most students and residents don't. some cool/trendy towns popular with young professionals is montclair, wayne, bloomfield, there abouts. there are bargains to be had if you have time to look. there are a few luxury apt buildings...even still, the rent there are still cheaper than NYC. as for parking...the security on campus isn't too shabby. i would park in the covered lots....and obviously lock your car up as you would anywhere. i wouldn't walk outside late at night without a security escort or with friends.

have a good time a newark...its trauma heavy...plenty of stabbings, shootings, MVAs to keep you busy 😉

The only thing that I can contribute to this discussion is to say purchase a Club for your car. I will never forget the empty feeling I felt as I stood in the empty parking space that my car once occupied. Go with your gut and do not park in certain areas.
I had misgivings but still parked my car overnight in a bad part of town.

My reference is not specific to Newark. I am speaking in general. I obviously do not live in NJ but I have lived in a few big cities. I had a car stolen and a tire slashed in the past. I had to learn the hard way not to leave my car in a bad neighborhood.

Dr.Delphin (Chair) knows a lot people around anesthesia and she's building a solid program from scratch. The caseload is heavy and because UMDNJ Newark is CIR you get one of the phattest paychecks on the resident circuit.

I never had a problem with Newark and I parked inside, outside and drove to some pretty sketchy parts (Ghetto Elementary School Tutoring). The place turned around in the last year. I people always talk about car thefts in cities like that, but I do not know any residents that had any problems. Had one car stolen in 2000 (but that was a medical student - and a Honda Civic).

Here's the kicker about Newark - it's ten miles from the city. There are many attendings who commute from Manhattan (peds Anesthesia and Dr.Delphin - upper west side). If you did that I would say you're hard core, but you can live in (and I have no idea why people from Newark aren't mentioning it)
- Hoboken (city of bars and nightlife)
- Jersey City (Waterfront - a beautiful place to live if you don't want to pay Manhattan prices).
- Montclair is alright if you're more into suburbia, although Montclair State U keeps it alive at night.

PM me if you have any more questions. I think it's a great place to train.
