I hear alot of talk about UMDNJ's boosting their schools emphasis on clinicals .

What are the requirements (# of extractions, etc) at UMDNJ/NJDS?
Also, when do the clinical's start and what do they consist of ?

Thanking in advance,
Ateeb

why do numbers really matter anyway? Just know that they are highly strong on clinicals. Much stronger than most other schools if not the strongest period. I believe they start seeing patients at end of first year.

Well we don't actually see patients at the end of the first year. During second year we do full dentures in a group for a patient. Clinic starts third year, like most schools. Basically, we have to do ~400 points for operative (3 pts for 1 surface amalgam, 5pts for 1-2 surface composites, etc.), which includes 10 class II amalgams and 10 class III composites, along with various competencies (class IV, class V, etc). We have to do 6 RPDs and 6 full dentures, 19 units of fixed (which includes 1 FGC, 5 PFMs, 4? full ceramics, 3 cast post/cores, 1 3-unit bridge, etc.), 1 implant case (insertion assist and crown afterwards), 20 extractions during junior year that includes some alveoloplasties and 3 surgicals, 20+ extractions during senior year (not sure exactly how many), 2 perio dx competencies during junior year (3 for seniors), 2 sc/rp competencies during junior year (3 for seniors), 3 endo during junior year and 5 endo during senior year (including 1 molar). Along the way we have various competencies (nutritional counseling, fixed, removable, tabacco cessation, prescription writing, biopsy, etc. etc.).

This kinda sums it up, although the exact details are not presented here.

How hard is it to get into the Perio program at UMDNJ?
