hey everyone,

i just recently saw the course schedule for UMDNJ for the first year and saw that there's a fall, winter, and spring session. the spring session runs from mid-March to JUNE 29????

i was just wondering... is this normal?! i always thought dental school ended at the beginning of may (at least first year) like most undergrad schools. june 29.... that's nearly july and 2 months more than what i was expecting. and then it starts again at the end of august! not even 2 months of break... seems extremely harsh.

i know that dental school will be hard work, but and i can't seem to understand why other schools only need jan-april, while UMDNJ needs jan-june. i looked around the schedule to see if perhaps we had some other time off that other schools wouldn't, but all i see is a normal winter break and week long spring break and that's it!

can anyone explain this to me?? current, future NJDS students or anyone else?

thanks!

Not all schools are the same. ECU for example has three semesters, and there is only two weeks off in the summer, one week in july and one week in august. Most schools do not get off in early may like undergrad, one I do know of is maryland, and they have a 3 month summer. Maryland is different though because you take your boards that summer, so they give people the time to study, and then after the second year you have about 4 weeks off for summer.

Like i stated, not all schools are the same, and if you are trying to figure out why you may go to school more days than others, it is because they all have different methods of teaching, and it may take more or less time to get the material covered.

VCU has 4 weeks off for summer. our full schedule ends early may, then we take general path until june 26, go back late july. next two years we have 2 weeks off / clinic / 2 weeks off.

take home message: if you want to go to school for 9 months, get another undergrad degree. if you want to be a dentist, start getting used to the fact that you'll get a few weeks off per year...that's better than a lot of other working people!
