can anyone give more info and their opinions on these two schools

go to nj med. NY med is TTT*. Expensive and the students there only go there because that's the best school that took them. Hint: there aren't that many schools that are worse than NY med.

I don't really know anything about NJ Med. However, I totally disagree with what bigredpingpong has to say about NYMC. When I interviewed there I was extremely impressed with the school. The campus is nice, it has really great hospital affiliations, and good residency placement. The board scores are really high (way above the national average) because the school puts a lot of emphasis on preparation for them - they give mini-board exams and they spend an entire year on pathology (rather than a half, like many schools). The facilities were all brand new, including the student apartments and the anatomy lab - which rocked. It's in Valhalla which is pretty lame. However, it's not far from NYC and many students live in NYC during the 3rd and 4th years. A few negatives are that it's not P/F for the first two years (they use H/HP/P/F) and it seemed like the first year students are real stressed out due to the frequency of exams. In any case, that's what I thought and learned about the school. Now, I feel like I wouldn't hesitate to choose this school over another which might be ranked higher. Hope this is helpful.

i interviewed there too. Accepted about 2 weeks later. I was also impressed with the many physical features of the school...ie new stuff. But, a lot of schools have that and more. So don't be bedazzled by all the new stuff...you're footing the bill with your tuition money. Take note also that research opportunities are almost nil. Does the NIH even fund it? A schools bloodline is its ability to generate scientific knowledge. Also, I noticed that students there weren't particularly proud to be there. I can name names if needed PM me. The majority of students there come from top UG schools however slacked of in the beggining, fu*ked off their GPAs and did satisfactory on the MCAT and got accepted after all the top applicants withdrew. Go wherever you want to go. If you like NYMC better, than go there. Consider money as well- if I were you, I would choose the cheaper school. Work hard, do well on your boards, and you'll end up in the same place you would have if you went to any other school.
Most importantly, don't take advice from conceited assclowns- best of luck- I have no doubt that you will love medical school.

You interviewed with NYMC this year and heard back in 2 weeks? I interviewed with them 9/28 and they told us 6-8 weeks...

Yes, roughly two weeks. Would you like to know my interviewers name, what they sent me when they accepted me? I can describe it to the nitty gritty. How about the name of the 1st year medical students that I talked to. I can PM you that and what they told me about their school.

While NYMC has some NIH funding and a MD/PhD program, NYMC is more for future physicians who want to be clinicans not researchers. The focus of the school is to create strong clinicans. If you wish to be a physician reseacher go to another school that focus on creating strong physician reaseachers.
NYMC suffers from being a private school without being associated with a big university. This means it is expensive education when compare to a public school but it is comparable to other private medical schools. Other reasons why students prefer other schools is name recognition. If you were going to pay for a school you want one with a name that others know.

The match list is excellent,it tells the story of the school better than any comment on this thread.It is as good or better a match list than 75% of US med schools.25 matches in Rads including Brigham,Duke,Cornell etc...that is not the mark of a low level program! Sorry Folks!
By all means if you get into Yale,Columbia,UCSF or Penn go there...but for for the great majority of US med schools..it truly wont make much differece.

to reply to the original thread, i think NJMS is a better school where you have the opportunity to work in a very busy level- 1 tramua center. the curriculum i hear is good, and students seem to be happy. lots of research being done, and continual expansion to make it even better. the only downside is being in newark, but you can learn to adjust and live in a nearby suburban town.

People here tend to be pretty social and as chill as can be expected for medical students. The research oppertunities are great and our match list is very impressive (13 people for ortho last year).
Newark, is a dicey place, but the campus is nice and nice places to live are nearby (and even Newark isn't that bad). The upside is that your clinical experience is very thorough since you are working in one of the busiest level 1 trauma centers in the nation (we are one of the only schools to have a trauma surgery clerkship).
I have friends at NYMC and they are happy as well, go where you felt the most comfortable and where you think the students are most like you, I think both schools will give you a good education.

Well...I'm a grad student at NYMC, and if BigRed is right about the med students being "third tier trash", or however he eloquently put it, then I'd hate to think what that makes me. Anyway, I know a lot of first and second years here, and they all seem pretty happy to be here, except for the fact that Valhalla and the surrounding area are boring. But the school is beautiful, great facilities, and once again, the numbers don't lie. If anyone has any questions about it, I'd be happy to answer them, though my knowledge is probably not as helpful as one of the actual med students. I'm still not sure why a) BigRed applied and interviewed here if he hates it that much, and b) why he has the stance he has, when he didn't list any real negative substantive facts about the school, other than the first years he spoke to who didn't seem proud of it. Regardless, I think both schools are great, though the locations are very different, and thus the exposure during the first two years may vary quite a bit.
