Umdnj som reviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's an excellent school, one of the best DO schools in the country

I will be starting 2nd yr at SOM in august.

Pros:
SOM is a splendid school. I personally came to SOM because of it's outstanding hospital connections (second to none) and it's ever-expanding OPTI unlike stale or non-existent OPTI's which are plentiful in the DO world. New residency and fellowship programs open almost every year. There are plans to even open up a neurosurgery program at our principal hospital. Our Lady of the Lourdes at Camden is truly a gift. It's a legit core rotation site in terms of case diversity/exposure. Google it 🙂

NJ is very DO friendly. With the right board score, personality, research and letters, you can get some good programs in NJ, NY or Philly in whatever you desire...but you gotta be competitive if you want competitive spots/fields.

Boards prep is legit. THE Dr. BARONE came to our school to give 20 hrs of HY integrative pathology lectures to our 2nd yrs when 2nd yr had ended and they were getting ready for boards prep.

THE Dr. WHITE (the rockstar who teaches kaplan Neuro/histo) personally taught us Neuro. And he IS THE MAN.

Our 2nd yrs got 5 weeks of complete time off to study for boards. That is decent.

Cons:
There is a course in 1st yr as well as 2nd yr called CIPC which is an extreme waste of time. ALL lectures in 1st yr as well as 2nd yr are mandatory where they enforce attendance (in hitler style) and FORCE you to do nothing but listen to the nonsensical/useless lecture about community health which sometimes last 2-3 hrs.

2nd yr gets worse when it comes to ridiculously useless mandatory classes. There is a class called interpersonal communications where they also enforce attendance in hitler style and FORCE you to put everything away and listen to the useless lecture.
2nd yr CIPC gets a bit more of a pain in the ass because you have to do your project (a complete waste of time; sth to do with community health) and present it.

All in all, I'd say the only CON at this point of SOM is that its 2nd yr is packed with at least 6 hrs a week of nonsense (CIPC and interpersonal comm.) which, depending on your personality, you may or may not hate. Almost all 2nd yrs sincerely hated it mainly because it was taking away precious boards-prep time away from them.
This is the only flaw in the SOM curriculum.
All they need to do is make CIPC and Interpersonal comm. attendance optional. And that would make SOM perfect.
