UMiami versus UFlorida

Hey Floridians on SDN,

So here's the deal. I was admitted to UMiami in December. I'm really grateful that I got in, but I've been gunning to get into UF ever since I was placed "on hold" because (a) it's nationally ranked, and (b) it costs 12,000 per year, and (c) the UF kids seemed a whole lot happier and enthusiastic about their curriculum than the UM kids.

However, I've heard great things about UM--they have a great reputation for providing an excellent clinical education at Jackson Memorial, and their match list is actually quite impressive. So....I was wondering what other people thought about the two schools, and if one is clearly better than the other. (ie why should I waste all my effort trying to get into UF, if UM clearly likes me more???)

Did UM have 9 people fail step 1 last year? No? Enough said.

I'm currently being reviewed post-interview at EVMS. If tuition rates at UF and EVMS were the same and I had the option to choose between the two, I'd pick EVMS in a heartbeat. My only reason for wanting to attend UF over EVMS is that they offer nearly the same opportunities at a significantly reduced price. Since UF doesn't want me, I say piss on them. It's a healthy response, right?!? <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

My point: Don't let UFs #40 rank on the US News research list stand in the way of you going to the school that is best for you. Who knows how long they will stay in that position. With 9 people failing...

If I remember correctly, Miami was a ranked school a couple years ago. I think it was tied with Wake Forest, which is a pretty good school.

I wouldn't choose UM over UF, but that doesn't mean that Marmot shouldn't...if he likes UM better.

As I said, and I honestly mean it, I would choose EVMS (a non-ranked school) over UF in a heartbeat if costs of attendance were the same. Unfortunately money would have been a determining factor, and I would have attended UF (the lesser of the two schools, in my opinion) if I was admitted. I wasn't, and now I am in a position where I may have to choose between a school that costs $29,000/yr (EVMS) and a school that costs $8,000/yr (USA). I may end up choosing EVMS.

Go where you will be happiest.

Bitter? Yes. Judgement fogged? Not at all.
