Umich class of 2007... go BLUE!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
He he, after reading SP's posts on this thread, and after meeting Sunny several weeks ago, I'm reminded of how much fun it's going to be to taunt these Southerners and Californians in winter.

Just kidding, it really isn't as bad as it sounds. Just bundle up properly...I moved to the Midwest from a desert, and I adapted to the cold pretty quickly. You all can too.

Blah, you all are wusses. I grew up in the Upper Peninsula, where it is FAR colder and much more barren (no town larger than 20K for several hours) than Ann Arbor. Statistically, it is the snowiest place, along with Buffalo, in the US. I survived. Going to U of MI for dental school (which likely will NEVER happen for me, being an in-state white male from the U.P., all four are MAJOR strikes against you at MI) would be like a trip to the beach.

I would be far more worried about the egotism and the fact that, among all of my friends who managed to get in there for undergrad (no white males), ALL of them transferred out within a year. Maybe I am just bitter after being rejected from there for undergrad with a 34 ACT and a 3.7 due largely to affirmative action, even though I got in at Notre Dame and Northwestern. This is a major reason I want to declare my MN residency though, even if I have to wait a year to take my prerequisites after business school.

wow. and this has *what* to do with this thread?? 😕

anyway....
SP - it was 34F this morning when i got up.

My God, these obsessed lunatics will go to any extreme to start an AA thread won't they?

Dude, at this time, there's about 348 other threads for you to air out your grievances.

Honestly though, as an Indian who is an out of stater, I felt that AA helped me. I mean come on, I'm sure its EASIER to get in out of state, right?

On a side note, I would be careful making fun of southerners. Californians will just go all liberal on you, but I am from the town where the modern KKK was revived, and the state where Dukes of Hazzard was made. We're all big fans of guns and the NRA (did you know Charleton Heston lives in Detroit?). You don't want a southerners.........might spark the next civil war (people down here do think that a) the south won b) the south will rise again c) "the war of northern aggression" is still being fought).

To the person worried about weather. If you have never lived in snow (I'm from Ohio originally) and think it will make you miserable, you might want to rethink. Most people adapt really quickly though. If you are big fan of running outdoors and other things that require nice weather, you'll be in for a world of hurtin'.

Have I rambled on enough?

Sorry Sunny, but your 'South-cred' is all non-existent with me after I realized that I can imitate a Southern accent better than you can.

You're going to have a lot of catch-up work to do this summer if you want to scare any of us.

And I'm going to have to disagree with you again in advice for SP and the others concerned aobut weather: snow really ISN'T THAT BAD. It adds some variety to your life...everyone will adapt to it because you'll have no other choice.

34F in May? That sucks. But I can deal.

Actually, the thing that bothers me about living in other places is the precipitation more than the temperature. I don't mind when it's cold really, but when it's raining or snowing, that's just a big old pain in the ass. You get all wet and have to carry an umbrella and everything... bleh. The only thing that I hate about the cold is that you have to wear a lot more clothing, and it's a pain in the ass to put on a jacket and gloves and all that crap when I'm used to just throwing on a shirt and shorts and walking outside wearing sandals.

In other words, I don't mind the cold (I actually like it). I'm just lazy...

And cloudy weather makes me slightly depressed.

yeah and it's 70 out right now 😎

precip in ann arbor isn't that unbearable. there's snow, but it's no Buffalo. buy an umbrella, a coat with a hood and get a lot tougher. 😉 😛

Hey guys,
is Ann Arbor colder than places like New York or Chicago? I just want to know if the weather in Ann Arbor is comparable those places, so I can have an idea just how cold it is. or is the weather more like Seattle, which rans for 1/2 the year and then snows for 1/2 of the year

ooooh 70 is nice. but i bet it's cloudy. 🙁

(checked ann arbor weather --> partly cloudy)

sunny here in lansing. 😎

but if you're thinking you're getting temperate weather.... especially in the winter, sun is hard to come by.
*get SP a sun-lamp or a dawn-box*

ooooh no seattle here. it's freezing cold here from about halloween until easter. think of chicago and that's about right - just a little less biting wind.

I'll start training today to improve my southern accent. It needs a lot of work though. I'll try not to disappoint ya'll time come August.

On the weather discussion, I think it is pretty nice in Ann Arbor this time of year. It isn't like Atlanta where the heat gets annoying when you spend time outdoors. Honestly though, i find rain more annoying than snow; maybe that' just me though.

SP,

I think Californians are always a source of entertainment for non-California medical school applicants. When I was Vanderbilt, one guy from California vocalized how surprised he was that everyone didn't walk around in cowboy boots and hats in nashville. At my Emory interview, the guy next to me (from Alabama) and I spent all of lunch talking about how the war of northern aggression is still going on. This was after he said he was surprised how Atlanta wasn't as backwards as he expected. And of course there was always the California appliants who feel obligated to tell everyone at every interview how they applied to 30+ schools, hoping to have everyone feel sorry for them (or be in awe or for some unknown west coast reason). The first time I heard it, i was surprised, after that I ignored them.

Trust me, I'm not a hater, but these are just a few of the quirks of california kids..... 🙂

OH MY GOODNESS!
i take a little vacation from the web and look at what i miss out on!
what's up my little future wolvies! you'll have so much fun! the snow will be great, the ice, the rain, the wind!!! you'll love it all. you will face it headstrong and come out in the end with MICHIGAN CHARACTER!-- along w/chapped lips, dry skin, and fatty buildup.

but yes SP, i rode my bike all during the winter months and it was fine. You just need to add one of those butt protector fenders-- so that all the spray doesn't come and hit you in your rear and everyone thinks you had an accident. OH I do have a picture of me and my bike when it was completely frozen over-- i'll try to post it up here sometime.

Gmoney- when's your party again? I'M MOVING TO ANN ARBOR on june 17th!!! Let me know if you're in town-- and you can all come on over and we'll eat like crazy.

1) i have NO fatty buildup! i am BUFF STUFF! 😎 😉
2) i'm moving this weekend. picking out paint tomorrow evening. 😀 w00t!

i was going to say---

to deal with the fatty buildup ... do what i do.

Pump your fist and say out loud: I MUST, I MUST, I MUST INCREASE MY BUST.

Trivia: What book is that from????

wow! it's so much easier/quicker to post!

im a long time lurker since i got in (and also because you guys are so excited and chatty) and i figured i'd ask all you ann arbor experts about where i'm moving: huron towers? its not too cheap but it sounds like its close to the school - except i didnt see anything about it in the packet i recieved. should i be worried?
i guess it doesnt matter now because im moving up there in about two weeks. whats going on this summer?

🙂 hi mattie. don't let lavidee and his blue and gold painted face scare you away! 😉 (just picking!) or SP and his fear of getting wet!

anyway, huron towers is in a good location and within walking distance. it's nicer than the white coat ghetto (med center court/island drive), but it's kind of a high-rise. and nothing w/in walking distance is all that cheap, anyway. how did you find it and why did you choose to live there? shot in the dark? (i'm just curious) i'm sure it'll suit your needs just fine. and if it doesn't - you can always move next year. 🙂 nothing to be worried about.

oh yeah - did everyone get that "prematriculation summer program" thing? very odd - maybe they think i'm a sketchy/risk student and only sent it to me? or did everyone get it? 😕 anyway, i'm not doing it. no need for an extra month of school to remind me how to study. 😛

when did you get that goodmonkey?

i haven't gotten any new mich news since that big packet that had the tuition deposit form.

i got it last week, i think?
maybe they think i have a sketchy academic record? (i don't, by the way) ... or maybe they sent it to people who have been out of school for a few years (ugrad in '99... did some grad work in '01 but left it) .... ? i dunno. either way, i'm not going. 😀

lavidee - i have no need to increase my bust. i like the little guys alright as they are 😛 😉

Note to self: At all costs, do not copy off of GM.

GoodMonkey,

I bet that sent that to all non-trads...even though you didn't graduate that long ago. I didn't get it, but I've only been out of school one year so I'm pretty sure that makes me as traditional (and boring) as they come 😛

I'll be moving in August 1st.

Another question...has anyone else not received their financial aid package? Sorta ridiculous that its May 15th and I still have no idea whether I can afford this place or not!

merlin--
re: financial aid package -- did you get the email that said they were stuck in the processing b/c of a server upgrade snafu and that they'd give you an estimate of your package if you contacted this one person (don't remember who it is - i can't access that email account here at work)? in any case, if you *need* to have an estimate of your fin aid -- then go back to that email and check to see who you have to contact. otherwise, it's just annoying but we have to sit tight and wait a bit (who knows till when) before we get the package. blah!

Here's the person:

If you require an estimate, do not respond to this e-mail. Please send your request, including your social security number, directly to Mary Jo Blinn ([email protected]). We will prepare an estimate and respond to you via e-mail within 2 to 3 business days.

Everyone I am friends with has been making fun of how fat Michigan folk stereotypically are. Once you see me, you can understand why gaining weight isn't a bad think for me........but as one of my friends said, "Don't feel bad. Unless you like girls double your weight, you probably won't have a date for the next four years. But hey, if you ever have spare time, come visit me at Florida (UF)." Whatever.........does a Michigan character include the accent?

sunny - yeah there are lots of tubbos up here. i am the only one of the michigan women who is not. 😉 haha. we need that insulating layer of body fat to protect us and nourish us during the cold, long, frigid winter. riiiiiiiiiiight.

my bf says i sound "canadian" and he's from TN (of course he sounds "southern" 😉 )

Me. I will be attending my first choice, U Mich. I am so excited to meet you all in August!

not me... but anxiously awaiting the call! 😕

from what i've learned from other threads, there were a few people who were pulled off the UMich WL last week. lucky ducks, they are!

Anyone know if/how medical students can get tickets to games? I was told we would get info in the April packet, but no luck there.

bah i am SO not a sports fan (i know, i know, wrong school 😛 ) so i'm no help re: gettin' tix.

although i WOULD like some friggin fin aid info here. i emailed a couple of questions to the admissions office and one of them was when do we get fin aid packets sent - but the email i got back answered all questions except that one. 🙄 anyone else know?

Be gone football heathen! Repent now before it is too late.

ANYWAY... I still haven't gotten fin aid packets either. I DID get a nice letter from the housing dept saying that the campus housing is all booked an unavailable. 🙄

So... I'm thinking of moving to med center court. Any compelling reasons to do otherwise? It seems like the simplest thing to do in terms of getting housing.

I emailed yesterday to ask for an estimate and was told they were sent on the 23rd of May so they should be on their way.

Congratulations on getting in

You all will love U of M and we look forward to meeting you all.

Re: Housing
Please visit the C of 2007 bulletin to hook up with roommates

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~nahuja/

click the link for class of 2007

Your best bet in Ann Arbor is to share a 2 bedroom since 2 bedrooms are typicall only $100-200 more than one bedrooms. Most students live in the "med school ghetto" which=Island Drive and Med Center Courts apartments. They are actually nice so dont ask why it is called "ghetto"

Use the bulletin to hook-up with a m1-to be.

enjoy your summer!!

Thanks! Could you expand more about these two apartments? I've read that Island Drive often has bug problems, and that Med Ctr Court has insufficient heating. For both I've read that the walls are thin (meaning you can hear your neighbors). Are these rare complaints, rumors, or are they common?

hey guys,

does anyone know if med students can take undergrad courses?

You can if you can schedule it in. I asked. I was thinking about taking one class, but I looked at last year's M1 class schedule, and it hardly allows for it. Classes range from 8/9am to 5pm often. The 5pm stuff is labs of some sort I'm guessing or small group stuff. Not quite sure yet. I guess once we find out our schedule you will know.

umm... are you on the email list from the school? they sent out some samples of M1 and M2 schedules as part of the new curriculum a few weeks back. no classes straight thru from 8/9 to 5pm anymore. mornings are full, but that's about it. the rest looks like small group and unstructured study time, with a day or two tossed in as an exception w/an afternoon class. lecture time/week is around 12hrs. part of the whole new curriculum thing. there are even a couple days in the sample that are totally free - i.e. no class. a big part of the new curriculum is to make it a little less traditional and structured, with less of an emphasis on head-on-all-go lecture, as it was in the previous years.

If anyone happens to have the emails from between april 22 and may 27, I'd love you if you could send them to me..... [email protected] . I got removed from the school's list for about a month for some reason. I had them correct it, but I never got the missing emails. I'm particularly interested in the schedule. If no one has it, I guess I can email probably get it from the school......
