UMich fleece action

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
fleeces are post acceptance. as for turnaround, some are very fast (mine was <24 hrs) and others are 1+ months. Seems pretty random. Although it felt like they give you nearly a clean slate for the interview.

you can recieve the acceptance the night of your interview.

Some accepted applicants recieve fleeces but not all (is what I've heard at least).

I know I'm entering the medical field for the fashion. First fleeces, then white coats & stethoscopes!

I got in, but no fleece. Just some lame calendar instead =[

Well, here's something that everyone should have gotten--that email about the admit website and the chat on Monday? Anyone planning to "attend"?

Hey all you guys who applied to and were accepted to Umich. Could you post your stats? They haven't interviewed me and will probably soon reject me and I don't know why.

Now I'm even more upset, since it doesn't look like I'll be getting any fleece.

I did my undergrad at UofM, so I have an appreciation for their awesome programs....but does anyone besides me think that a fleece upon acceptance is awfully gimmicky?

It's a really nice gesture, especially after a long and frustrating process AND an expensive (for some of us) trip to Detroit. Gimmicky? Perhaps, but certainly appreciated.

understandable

For those of you where were accepted... how were you notified? I just had my interview on friday, and I am curious.

I am not too thrilled how it went- I mean it wasnt bad, but I didnt stand out from the ~50 people who were there!

Accepted by email; I interviewed on a Friday and got the email the following Tuesday, followed by a call from Dr. Ruiz. The fleece came around 6 weeks later (Christmas time)

You get an email with a video link in it, and, if it's a weekday during office-hours, they'll update your status page. Mich has a really fast turnaround, and their committee definitely met before they told my interview group they would (they said "Wednesday," I got the email on Sunday), so you should know something soon.

I don't know about the chat session, but I do intend to check out the admitted students' site. UM is definitely one of my top choices, I've already started saying stuff like "Go Blue." Made my mom mad, she went to Texas and was ticked that I was going for the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl. I dunno what she was mad about, the Longhorns won...

Anyone have any succinct tips for admission? My interview is Friday. Have a flight through #*@#*# Phoenix from Seattle @!*#!)(&(. 😀

It's pretty laidback, but be prepared to answer "Why UMich," especially if you're out of state. That definitely came up in all three of my interviews, and they joked a little with me about how I would handle the weather, coming from GA (I haven't figured that bit out yet  ). But I think that's fair--they want to see if you would be serious about leaving behind "X" far-away (and perhaps relatively-mild-wintered) state for UMich. Other than that, people seemed to be very unpretentious and laidback, so just be yourself.

Good luck!!! :luck:

Good tips; totally a fair question coming from Seattle as to why I'd want UMich. They have to know one of the big components of it is reputation. I doubt there is a single applicant who wants to go to every medical school they apply to on each one of those schools' merits. Nonetheless, I am more and more impressed with UM the more I learn. Thanks for the help 👍

so what other schools give you stuff when you get accepted? i wasn't going to apply to umich, but i might now because of the fleece (yea i know, i get tempted by stupid things)

using the money that you would spend on the primary and secondary application, I'm sure you could buy one 😉

With all these questions about the stuff UofM is passing out, I'm getting a little freaked. Is there anyone out there who didn't get an acceptance that arrived the day after they interviewed complete with a fleece/mercedes/Hope diamond? Frankly, I'd be happy if they accepted me by writing "you're in" on a napkin with crayon.

what the hell is a fleece?

In other news, weather.com says it's going to be 0 degrees when I fly in on Thursday night. I don't think I've ever experienced 0 degrees. Tips?

When you park in the parking deck (which is kinda far away from the Med Sciences Bldg), go through the buildings until you find the right place. I walked outside all the way, and I couldn't feel my face for a while.

it has a dual meaning depending on whether you're a current student or an applicant.

i wonder if the fleece students will have VIP seats in lecture halls, their own study areas, their pick of electives, or whatever else this school decides is needed to attract the top students to michigan. there is something to be said for a school that treats students differently before they even set foot on campus. how will the unfleeced get treated at michigan? personally i think this petty disparity reflects extremely poorly on this institution.
