Hey guys, I was just wondering, is there any way that I can establish state residency in Michigan in order to pay in-state tuition for d-school? I'm currently going to an undergrad school in Massachusetts, and I noticed there aren't any public d-schools in that state. The cost of d-school is high, so I was wondering if there's a way to get state residency in Mich. like after 1 yr or something. Thanks!

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt it. I have lived in Michigan my ENTIRE life but I go to school out of state. I applied to Michigan and they sent me some forms to fill out to "prove" I am a Michigan resident. So, I fill them out, send a copy of my driver's license, tax forms. A month later they contact me again asking for my parents driver licenses AND tax forms. Are they fricking serious? Yes. You'd think my ID alone would be enough, but noooo. My point: if you want in-state status at U of M you better be a great document forger.

YOU WILL NOT GET MICHIGAN RESIDENCY AT ALL...im outta state and i know i wont there i didnt eve attempt... couple of examples:

1) D1 in my class moved to Michigan for 11th and 12th grades, went to UofM undergrad, and they still gave him problems for residency
2) my cuzins husband--she lives in Michigan all her life...he moves to Michigan for his Med Residency, works, has a kid in michigan, Lives in michigan for like 6-7 yrs and when he went back for his masters they gave him trouble with that regarding in state status

if u want michigan that bad and value it that much 15 k more a year is worth it...maybe not for others but for me it is

man, that sucks. Mich was my top choice school too (love the town, football, and the whole feel of the school).

I read online that on some ocassions, the Mich school will reimburse your oos tuition If you become FULLY employed in that state -- so If I set up my practice in Mich., maybe I'll still come out winning.

The thing I would hate the most is coming out of d-school w/ 200,000 in debt. But that's probably what I would have to dish out anyway If I go to a private d-school.

Anyway thx!

cant say ive heard that offer...but sounds too good to be true
plus dental school is an investment...plus your happiness during those four years counts in your overall life happiness as well

You can get instate residency at UMDNJ starting first year, and you can get instate tuition starting 2nd year at UConn.

All true! Michigan residency is impossible. Ann Arbor is a great town, but not worth the debt of out of state residency (in my opinion at least).

In addition to UMDNJ and UConn, you can establish in state status for New York with no hassle after one year, making year 2-4 in state residency, so add Stony Brook and Buffalo to your list. Buffalo takes in a bunch of out of staters, and Stony Brook (though it may not seem so from the asda book) has made a deeper commitment to letting in out of staters as well, and is well worth the application.

Thanks for the tips! I'll look into UConn but I'm not even considering Jersey..shudder...

As for Buffalo --- I'm a New Yorker! born and raised so I always have that safety "cheap" school if things don't go right. The concept of living in Buffalo is a major turnoff though. My uncle went there and he said the school is good but the ambience sucks and its kind of dreary.

Then again, during d-school you're probably not gonna see the outside world much! Well, at least for the first years or so.

Anyway, Thx again!!
