Why cant all schools have secondaries as well done as this? I dont have to worry about trying to type in a crappy PDF file, I don't have to send a FAP approval form, hell I can even copy and paste my courses from AMCAS into their required courses section. Good stuff 👍 👍

I *heart* UMICH 😍

Does UMich screen/invite, or is an unscreened secondary up?

I dunno, you have to log in to get the secondary but I dont know if its screened.

I'm sure you'll receive it at some point during the day. I haven't gotten it yet, either.

I think that it's screened. That's what I understood from the MSAR.

yep i believe so

fantastic. although, i do prefer it if a school does the pre-screen...

Hey are you guys doing it in Internet Explorer? Does anyone know where to download netscape?

PDF's from some schools, online from others, now netscape. I wish I was a comp. sci major...

yeah, i dont understand why we cant use I.E. 😕 😕

Well, I'm still waitin' on my Umich secondary. I hope it's cause they're releasing them it alphabetically (I'm towards the end). Sad me... In the mean time...

Try Firefox... It's the new mozilla based browser... It's the browser that has evolved out of the remnants of netscape. It's nice

Here's a great article from slate.com about it:

I prefer Opera to Mozilla🙂 I am sure you'll get a secondary soon.

thanks. you deserve a secondary, anyway!
i think people have been getting them throughout the day. and, i doubt that UMich could have screened everyone in just a week and a half.
good luck

"All applicants are requested to fill out a secondary application online, but only about 40% of applicants are asked to comlpete the application by submitting letters of reference."

so does that mean that they interview 40%, since if you are asked to submit letters, you are getting an interview?

i appears not. according to the data listed in the MSAR, last year U Mich had 4,767 applicants (40% of this would be approximately 1,900) but only 672 applicants were interviewed.

They better not be sending them out alphabetically or else I will cry 😡
(I am letter C). U Mich is my number one choice so I hope they don't diss me that that.

IIRC, last year Michigan pre-screened for automatic interview and secondaries. Those who got automatic interviews (usually in Sept/early Oct) just had to fill out to secondary as a formality (those people will usually hear about a final decision on oct 15th). Those who didn't get an interview but got a secondary had to wait for another round of screening to be offered an interview (mid Oct onward). I did not get offered an initial interview (stats weren't sky high) but after filling up the secondary, it took them about 3 weeks (mid-August) to schedule me for an interview.

Hope this info helps! Good luck 🙂

eta--actually i forgot it isn't the secondary they screen for, it's the request for the LORs.

When you log in, what do you use at your log in name and password?

Like with Ohio state your login ID is your AAMC ID and your password in the first letter of your last name + the last 4 digits of your ID + the first letter of you first name.

Does Umich have a system like that?

Can someone post the secondary essay prompt here, so people who haven't gotten it can start writing? - Thanks.

Exactly as quoted:

C. ESSAY. Select one experience from your list in part B and describe in a brief essay how it impacted on your decision to go into medicine. Do not exceed 400 words.

NOTE: It may be easiest to first type your essay into a word processor (e.g., Word) or a text editor, and then cut-and-paste it into the box below. Entering it into Word will give you a backup copy of your essay, if needed.

hope that helps.

Also, they ask that you enter your 6 most significant experiences, and then choose one for the essay (obvious from the above prompt). I think you don't summarize the experiences, but just put dates, time commitment, leadership positions.
Post if you have any other secondary q's.
good luck

i77ac, calstudent: thanks for the help.

I was asked to send in my letters. Is that 40% thing for real?

In the MSAR, it says all applicants are asked to fill out a secondary, but only 40% are asked to submit letters.

I applied, but havent heard anything from them yet.

Lucky you! Do you have super-high stats?

Not outrageously high (32 MCAT, 3.8 GPA), but my personal statement was stellar (not bragging ... that's just the feedback that I have gotten from everyone).

I requested that my letters be sent yesterday because it takes forever for my school's LOR service to mail them.

If it's true that they prescreen and grant "automatic interviews" to some people (for whom the secondary will be a formality), then it might even be good news if you haven't gotten a secondary yet. At least, that's what I'm hoping...

Hmmm... I was told that I will receive an automatic interview, yet I have not received the invite for the secondary! 🙁 ..lol...

I would have to think this is the case. Unless they happen to exclusive screen out people with my stats, I feel that I should get a secondary.

has anyone else gotten a request for letters? i haven't. if so, what were your stats (if you don't mind sharing)?

Not to put forth conspiracy theories but.....

Since IndyZX and DrThom posted their MDapplicants profiles, I checked out their info (Very bright folks btw). They both posted their AMCAS verification date. both of them are 6/22/04. That happens to be the same date mine was verified. My stats aren't quite as good as theirs, but I'm standing outside the ballpark they're in and none of us have received secondary info. Makes me wonder if verification date might have something to do with who's received secondaries. IndyZX and DrThom, you both have great stats... you guys will get the secondary. Besides... I grew up in Michigan. Are you sure you want to spend four winters there? (Just to counter that... Ann Arbor is a great town).

Good luck to all.

I received an invitation to send letters by email today (Friday). Not really sure how this factors in with the automatic interviews and people not receiving invites yet. Who knows...good luck everyone.

Hi guys,

I hate rumors so I called the Admissions Office directly. Here's what I found out:

1. All people are invited for a 2ndary.
2. Based on last year's numbers, the lady said about 1000 are invited to submit letters of recs.
3. these ppl are reviewed and then some are interviewed. last year 675 were interviewed.
4. They have a class size of 70. I forgot to ask how many ppl they accept.

Hope that clears things up!

for those of you who were asked to submit letters of rec, had you already submitted your secondary back to them? or did they ask you to submit your letters in the same email you received inviting you to complete the secondary?

Thanks for doing that. But, I think their class size is actually 170 (that is what it says on the website). Good luck guys.

I got one email on Thursday notifying me of the secondary and a second, separate email on Friday asking me to submit the letters. I had not (and still haven't) submitted the secondary before the letter request came. Hope that helps.

thanks sandg! good luck with your apps.

i visited last august and spoke with an admissions counselor who said that it is 170. she also said that about half of the class is from michigan and of the remaining half, it is pretty evenly split between men and women.

UM sent me the request for LOR's on the same day they sent me the request for secodary application, before i can get started on it.

My LOR request came within a few hours of the secondary, so I hadn't submitted anything. I submitted last night, actually.

thanks everyone for the info. i received my request for lors from them too 😀

and for people who have submitted the secondary already, did any of you have problems with paypal? i could have sworn i hit the "pay" button on the umich secondary, which directed me to my paypal account, but my balance still says $0.00. anyone know if it takes a few days to process? i'd like to be sure before i pay them $120 instead of just $60...

Is anyone else still waiting on the UMich secondary? My AMCAS was verified July 1st and I haven't heard anything from UMich yet...just wondering...

still waiting.

i was just wondering, what is the point of sending everyone secondaries if they are going to selectively ask for letters of recommendation? i am thinking that those asked for recommendations are first priority, then maybe those who completed secondaries will be reviewed and sent LOR requests also....

but i'm thinking that i'm going to wait till i get a LOR request before even bothering to complete the secondary....

On the secondary essay, I already put on my AMCAS about how my involvement in music influenced my decision to enter medicine. However, i would like to talk about another important activity. Would it be allright to start an essay "As I mentioned on my AMCAS....blah blah blah" or is that a faux-pas.

what's the deal with michigan and the biochem? i know they say they require 3 credits of biochem, but it says on the secondary that we can demonstrate at the time of the interview that other courses fulfilled the biochem requirements. i have 10 credits of gen bio, 3 of microbiology, and 3 of genetics. plus, i was a damn chemistry major. it's ******ed to require biochemistry of certain people.

Probably I wouldn't do this. They will most likely have read your AMCAS, but just re-state in one sentence your interest and then jump right in (i.e. assume they read AMCAS, but don't reference it directly). I did this on one of my drafts of a different essay and it sounded kind of lame I thought.

As far as I know, Michigan is the only school that does it this way - secondary separate from LORs. Usually when you fill out a secondary it tells you to have LORs sent too.
