UMICH Secondary

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Finally got UMich today - first an email with the secondary link, then an email request for LORs. It's slow, but it's coming, folks...

Has anyone received the secondary but not a request for the LOR's? Because I got the secondary this afternoon without a request, and I sure as hell am not going to fill this out if theyre not even going to ask me for LOR's. For those that did receive the request, was it always the same day?

Yea I got a secondary this morning but no request for LOR's, and as much as I love 🙄 sharing my coursework and activities for a nominal fee...somehow I'm thinking it might not be worth it, however it is considerably shorter than other secondaries and paying online saves me the trouble of using up my personalized checks.

I think I'll give them 2 weeks. If I don't get a request then it's pretty clear I'm not in their top echelon, and I'll probably scrap them. But it pisses me off that a 37, 3.7 isn't good enough for them bastards. 😎

wow, that would piss me off too...
but their initial filters can't be that highly refined yet...I'm sure you will get a request soon 🙂

i'm sure i'll be getting an acceptance any minute now with my 29, 3.6 - I am SO ****ING IN!!!

Anyone not from Michigan get an automatic interview before submitting secondary / LORs?

Did anyone have an issue with the "certify and submit" button, reappearing even after clicking it once? I went through and submitted once but the redirect took me to an error page. So then I went back and hit submit again and the same thing happened. Finally, I went back once more and then clicked "Save and Submit Later" and all of a sudden the "Certify and Submit" button finally disappeared. I'm wondering if this hapened because I used IE instead of Netscape. I hope it didn't end up sending multiple copies!! 😕

holy crap, i didnt know they did this. did you even fill out a secondary or send in lors?

I got the email for the secondary Wednesday afternoon and the email requesting the LORs Thursday afternoon. So anyone who's wondering, it may take more than a few hours to get them both.

They asked me to fill out a secondary and send in LORs, but when I logged on to my secondary page for the first time, it said that I had already been invited for an interview and that I would be getting something in the mail in a few days.

Hey, I got this as well. I wasn't sure if it was for real or not, but I guess the snail mail will confirm it.

It's for real! I already got the letter and called them to schedule the interview. I think its an automatic interview for in-state people or Umich undergrads with a certain gpa/mcat, or something like that.

I just received the secondary and submitted it. When I did PayPal, I don't know what happened... my payment went through, but there was some error when I tried to go back to the Michigan site. It doesn't say whether I paid or not. Hopefully it will work itself out.

I'm not in-state or a UMich undergrad... but nice to hear it's for real. Do we need to fill out the secondary still?

What were your stats, if you don't mind me asking?

i'm not instate either and got an interview from them (umi)- curious how much later you got the letter?

Yea, in the letter I got in the mail, it said that they will need to have all of the application materials (LORs, secondary application filled out, application fee paid, and a passport-style photo) proir to the interview date. They are offering interviews every Friday, starting Sept 10th, you just have to call the office and tell them which date you want...nice and easy 🙂

kewl! i got the interview invite too! now waiting for NU secondary 😳

My status section says that I should be getting something in the mail regarding interviews but I haven't seen anything yet. I'm wondering if it's my mail service or perhaps additional time to get to the west coast. Anyone else not received their invite in the mail yet? Thanks.

Hi, for people with the UMich secondary, do we have to send in a photograph? I couldn't find the info. anywhere! And, also, if on our status page something has a check mark, does that mean they've received it?

Thanks in advance

Yes and yes.

It should of said in the LOR request email to send a photograph

I am a Michigan resident, and my AMCAS was verified on 6-23. I have not received a seconsary from U of M yet. I am getting a bit worried since you guys have already got it. I wonder if there was a problem with email or something. I also have not received anything from Wayne or MSU. Anyone else still not have the secondary?

Does anyone know what "technical standards" refers to on the status page?

medic170, don't worry ... it will come! I haven't heard from MSU or Wayne, either.

thanks guys. uclastudent, there is a list of stuff, just click on it on that page, and you have to read and verify at the bottom of that page.

It only took me about 4 days to get the letter after it said online that I was getting an interview....but I live in Ann Arbor so the mail had to travel a whole 1/2 mile from the med campus to here....it might be an extra few days until you get yours, but it will come!

I didn't apply to MSU, but I haven't heard from Wayne yet either!

I can't seem to find it, either. 🙁 My app has already been submitted, BTW.

hmmmmm
it is on the status page, where it says you must read our tech. standards, which you can do by clicking "here" and the "here" is hyperlinked to their standards.
hope this helps.

That must appear after you get invited to the interview because my status page is nothing more than "please send us the crap we want". Us lowly U Mich applicants will have to wait patiently for them to grant us the privilage to read their technical standards.

Yeah, there is no hyperlink on my status page. I must only be semi-special because I did get the LOR request, but they don't want me to read the technical standards, yet. 😉

UMich responded to my e-mail about technical standards and said that it is something to be completed during the interview phase.

So when do you guys think the best time to interview at UMich? In the beginning with all the gunners? Or would it look bad if I put it off until like October?

my friend at UMICH swears that interviewing later is what got him in.

eventually you will have to interview anyway, and the quality of applicants are always going to be high at umich, so i doubt if it would make that much of a difference. you'll just have more time to prepare.

i've been wondering about this as well. you know how in figure skating competitions, they don't give out the 6.0's right away? it might be best to wait a bit until the first wave of folks has passed.

I don't go to UMich or live in Michigan but this is what happened to me

1) Got an e-mail saying I should fill out a secondary
2) Used Internet Explorer (I think it needs to be JAVA-enabled) and went to the secondary site
3) Homepage said that I was getting an interview and a letter was mailed to me
4) Two days later got a letter asking me to schedule my interview date
5) Went back to site and then filled out my secondary and paid for it online using my credit card through their paypal system.
6) Called the school, scheduled my interview, now they are just waiting for my recs and want me to send in a photo before the interview in October.

Hope this solves a lot of the confusion around. The UMich process is so fast and friendly. They're bumped up on my list of favorite schools 😀

Hey Cerbernator - when your friend says interviewing "later" is what got him in, does he mean later like October, or later like March? Is it bad to interview right away? I figure that the people interviewing in this first couple months will all have roughly the same stats anyway.
HOWEVER, if I can convince all you SDN'ers to wait a month, then it'll be even better to interview early!🙂

Hey all,

What's the password on the status page? I have lost--see my other tragic thread--the email...I have it printed off somewhere but if someone could help me out...I thought it was last name but that's not working;-(

It should be the first 8 letters of your last name. Oh, and if you are using the link to the status page that is in the sticky thread at the top of this forum ... it doesn't work. You won't be able to log in with that link. Use the link provided in the e-mail sent to you by UMich. 🙂

Oh, you lost the e-mail. I'm a nerd! I lost the e-mail, too, so I can't help you there.

password is your last name in lower case letters.

Hello from the Admissions Office at the University of Michigan Medical School. We have received your AMCAS application for the entering class of 2005. Thank you for your interest in our medical programs.

The next step of the review process is available to you on our Admissions Website:
https://www.umms.med.umich.edu/appstatus/

You will log on to the Website using your AMCAS ID Number and your date of birth, with your last name as your password (up to 8 characters). DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER. Netscape Communicator is recommended. PCs are recommended over MacIntosh.

There are some specific questions and a brief essay. Not all questions apply to every applicant, so please read the questions carefully and answer all those that apply to you.

This year we have initiated a link with PayPal, an on-line payment service. You can pay your secondary application fee via this link, or you may have the option of using check or money order. If you choose the latter, there is a link to the application fee transmittal form. Please print out the form and send it in to our office with your check for the $60 UM application. (Or, you may produce a similar form with your name and AMCAS number to attach to your check or money order).

Once you have completed the Web Secondary with your information and essay, you will be required to certify the information and submit it electronically, just as you did with the AMCAS application. Once submitted, no changes can be made to the Web Secondary information. However, if you need to give us updated information, you may notify us at any point via phone, email, or in writing. There is no deadline for the secondary but file reviews do not begin until we receive your secondary application information and your application fee.

Once we receive your fee and secondary information, the next step is a review of your file and credentials. This process may take several months or even longer. At some point, you may be asked to send additional materials including letters of evaluation, or you may be notified of our decision to close your file. We generally do not close files until late Fall or early Winter, so that we can review files in comparison with the majority of the application pool. If you are taking the August MCAT, expect to hear from us some time after mid-October when we receive your scores. If we can offer you an interview, you will be notified by letter, with a choice of interview dates. If you choose to withdraw from the application process, we ask that you either call or email our office with that information so that we may close your file. Thank you for your patience while we review the files.

Please save this message, or bookmark the Admissions Website, so that you can return there. The Website will be updated as we receive your application materials or the status of your application file changes. You can visit the Website at any time to see your status, and to check if the Admissions Office has received materials that you submit.

The UM Medical School Admissions Office will assist you if you have any questions during the application review. We are available by phone during office hours, 7:30 to 4:30 Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday. The phone number is 734-764-6317. The address is 4303 Medical Science I, 1301 Catherine, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0624.
