Michigan Dental Students:

I want to know more about this pre-orientation. Is it worth the time?

Here is an excerpt from the letter that invites me:
All students admitted to the class of 2011 had application portfolios that met the high standards required for successful completion of the DDS program. However, there are varying life, career, and academic experience among the group that suggest Academic Pre-Orientation would "kick-start" their success and enhance their ability to achieve their true academic potential. With the current information available to us about your pre-dental preparation, we are inviting you and several others who will benefit from this experience to join us for the 2007 Academic Pre-Orientation program to be held from Monday, August 6 to Thursday, August 17, 2007.

Academic Pre-Orientation provides an opportunity to settle into Ann Arbor early, meet new classmates, faculty, and staff, and gain insight to the skills necessary to navigate the challenging dental curriculum. A curriculum of "mini-courses", which include Histology, Microbiology/Immunology, Biochemistry, Dental Materials, Dental Anatomy, Biology of the Dentition and Introductory Preclinical Experience are offered. In addition, seminars on academic skills and financial management will be included.

As a participant in this program, you will receive a stipend of $35 per day to cover food and incidentals for the 11 days of the program for a total of $385. Arrangements for housing during the program can be made, please ask if needed. ----------------------------

I really just want to paint my house and get settled in with my husband when I get to Ann Arbor - is this program worth the time?
Thanks
Also posted in Predent, not sure where it would be better placed.

I didn't go through this program because I never got the letter you are referring to but based on what it says it seems like this program could help you get into time management and that's all i think this program can help you. Lots of things in dental school you do goes pretty fast and no 11 day orientation can make any substantial difference in your 1st semester. Dental school is a marathon and I would enjoy every single day left before the dental school starts because dental school can be tiring at times and it will make you think why I didn't enjoy the time before school. I say be a BUM untill school starts.

Thanks for your input!

Anyone actually attend this orientation or offer any insight?

if going may help u get used to the atmosphere than it may be worth it...plus they are giving you 385 dollars to ensure that you are ready for the first day of school...? i am sure that they have seen some value in having the program for the "fitting" students

Good luck in everything! I'm just getting settled in AZ..I actually really like it here. Anyways, I think about Michigan from time to time...I would be moving there if I would've attended....then I could've known you better. You were a cool person and your words stay with me till this day that we talked about...take care

Thanks for your kind words, I enjoyed that time with you. PM me if you'd ever like to call and chat. My husband and I are leaving this morning from California, stopping in Mammoth just on the other side of Yosemite at the Whoa Nelly Deli, Then thru Nevada, stopping in Utah at Zion and Bryce Canyons, into Colorado to see my long time friend in Fruita, staying at my Aunt's in Colorado Springs, then on to MI.

Hey SunflowerRae, I will be attending this pre-orientation program. I did not know Michigan had it, but from what I heard when I went to interview at University of Iowa, which also has it, was that it is worth it because you have the chance to meet the faculty and maybe make bonds with them, since it is a small class. Anyway, I was planning on moving to Ann Arbor a week prior classes started, so I could get a taste of what is leaving in Ann Arbor, but I guess moving in a week earlier would not harm me in any way. If Michigan has it, it must be for a reason, maybe they have seen that students have greatly benefited from this program and has helped them to get ready before the real thing starts! Let me know if you will be attending. Good luck!

even if it is useless AA is well worth it 🙂
