Would you rather go to UMKC or Creighton? Why?

I lived 3 hours from both KC and Omaha, and decided to go to UMKC. I didn't actually visit Creighton, so I'm not a very good person to answer. I already knew I liked KC better than Omaha, and I love the way UMKC organizes the clinic (set up in teams, by 3rd and 4th year you get your own cubicle and don't have to worry about booking a regular restorative chair for a filling and ending up needing endo but having to reschedule for an endo chair.) I don't actually know how Creighton is organized, though. I also like the faculty at UMKC, and all the students are very friendly. UMKC also has a more lenient dress code I think--we can wear any solid color scrubs or business casual. I think it's just business casual at Creighton. UMKC is cheaper ($140 K for all four years, I think Creighton is $200 K). Anyway, good luck with your decision 🙂

Everyone I have spoken to has really enjoyed Creighton. There are no residencies so you will be better prepared to practice right away. There are more than enough patients to go around. Scrubs would be fun, but you can wear scrubs in your practice for the rest of your life, if you'd like. Omaha...great city-- Counting Crows think so to! Can't say I know anything about Kansas City. This school has been my top choice from the beginning, and I'm stoked to go!! See you there, maybe!

Thanks for the pointers. I have just heard that at UMKC the residents tend to get the more interesting cases. At Creighton you get chance to place implants and restore them. Scrubs everyday might be nice, but I can live with that for four years. I visited Creighton and I thought the students looked much more professional. UMKC is close to home though and is quite a bit cheaper. Can't decide...

I had heard about tougher cases going to specialties too, and it's true. UMKC has pretty much every specialty. But none of the 3rd and 4th years I've talked to are having trouble getting the cases they need. Another thing to think about if you may want to specialize, by the time you take your boards, they will be pass/fail. May be helpful to already go to UMKC and know the faculty. Also, it seems like UMKC accepts a disproportionately high number of UMKC dents to their specialist programs. I don't want to specialize, that's just what I've noticed.

My 11 tests in 11 days started last Friday, and I'm pretty glad I don't have to put on business casual tomorrow or trudge through snow in dress shoes 😱 (6-10 inches = Omaha, 1-2 inches = KC )

Creighton Jays all day 🙂

clinicals/education have a great reputation in graduation competent dentists

this is my number one goal graduating competent....I recently spoke to a Creighton grad and he is working private practice now he said

"As far as the school itself, I can give you my full recommendation. The clinical experience you will receive at Creighton outperforms most other dental schools. In fact, Creighton regularly ranks in the Top 10 each year for average National Board Part II scores (that would be the part of the boards that are based on most clinic-based questions). I went straight into private practice after graduation and have been more than comfortable in my transition because of the amount of experience I received. I was not one of the top students in my class, either, so I can say that most anyone should feel that way after graduation. Additionally, many of my classmates went on to specialty programs, so if that interests you, Creighton is a fine place to go. Creighton does not have their own specialty programs (which contributes to why dental students receive so much clinical experience- nothing gets referred to residents) but regularly sends a good many of their graduates to residency programs across the country every year. "

you'll make the right decision hope to see you next fall if you commit

take care mate

I couldn't deal with the shirt/tie all day for four years at Creighton. Just one more thing to annoy you when you already have a ton on your plate.

eh. They're clothes. There are more important things to consider when choosing a school IMO. It's like only having bathtubs in my house. Not the most convenient thing not to be able to stand up and shower every day, but I still get clean and I LOVE everything else about my house. 🙂 But...to each his own, I suppose.
