UMN Duluth Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My guess is that they were put in the mail on Wednesday, so nothing happened until Thursday. That would mean today or tomorrow for any letters to be arriving in the mail for the Twin Cities area.

So I just got my mail. Let's see, a bill, some junk mail, a catalog. That's it! No Duluth letter! 🙁 Are we sure they were supposed to mail them on Wednesday? Maybe it'll come tomorrow....

Anyone who lives closer to Duluth get a letter today?

Got my letter today. "Possible, but not likely". Good luck to you all.

same here. weeeeee!!!!!

So you got the same letter saying lower half and it is possible, but not likely. But do everything just in case. At least we sort of know now.

yep, same thing. i had a bad feeling about this WL anyways, it wasn't really a shocker. Both of my interviewers brought up my strong surgical ties, I kinda figured I was screwed then.

Aahh man! Why did you guys get letters and I didn't? 😕 Do you live in Duluth? God I hope my letter comes today!

That's too bad about the 'bottom half' though guys. At least you know where you're at though...

good luck mocha!

Thanks for the luck--unfortunately it didn't help. I got the same letter as both of you--the bottom half it is. That's really too bad--Duluth was my last hope! My indecision about family practice is what hurt me as well I think...I just couldn't lie to them and say I would definitely go into family medicine! Oh well.

I got my letter on Thurs (live in the Twin Cities) and I'm on the bottom half of the list. This happened to me last year and nothing happened. I'm going to look into PA or caribbean med school 🙁

have you considered doing a one year Masters program? I don't know your exact story, but I'd hate to see you settle for something that you aren't fully into. Don't give up.

Does anyone else here have other wait lists they are on, or others schools they are still waiting to here from?

Does UM Duluth accept out of state students? Will they cut you any slack if you are from an adjoining state and express interest in primary care?

Is it impossible for an out of state student with a 3.5 and a 30MCAT to get in at Duluth if the student expresses a sincere interest in primary care? Does it make a difference if the student is from a surrounding state like Wisconsin or North Dakota?

Using mdapplicants.com, I determined that one OOS applicant fitting your description (gpa <3.6 and MCAT <31) was admitted to Duluth. That applicant was Native American and had been deeply involved in Native American health care policy.

A copy of the MSAR might also help answer some questions about the proportion of OOS students enrolled at each med school.

Yeah It's really unlikely that someone from out of state will get into UMD med unless they are Native American or have super strong ties to family practice and Minnesota. My mom used to work in admissions there and she said without those it's almost a guaranteed rejectance. It kinda makes sense though...the goals of the school (rural/native american primary care) were mandated by the state legislature.

How in the world could you not get in with a 3.99gpa and a 30 MCAT? The median for matriculants was 3.62 and a 28Mcat.
