I am really torn between both of these great programs and need some help deciding on which one would be a better fit for me. My research interests lie in computational biology/bioinformatics and CVD/metabolism. Both programs are not particularly close to where I live currently, so travel distance isn't really a factor. Unless I'm missing something, I would also say both programs have similar levels of prestige, match outcomes, and NIH funding, so I don't think there would be any differentiating factors there.

UMN
Pros:
  • more research faculty in my areas of interest
  • higher external research award success rate
  • newer medical school facilities
  • pre-clinical is true P/F (no internal ranking or AOA, which could be a con?)
Cons:
  • medical school curriculum is undergoing changes
  • didn't get a strong sense of community
  • higher COL
  • very cold
UAB
Pros:
  • great community/happier students
  • warmer weather
  • better COL
  • enthusiastic and more diverse faculty, even if they don't align perfectly with my interests (which could also change)
  • better clinical opportunities (based on my interests)

Cons:
  • after first semester, pre-clinical is H/P/F
  • less diverse city
  • facilities are older

Tough choice... but I'd lean towards MN. As an MSTP student the most important thing (in my opinion) is research fit and it sounds like MN would be better for that. MSP COL isn't that bad even if it is higher than UAB. Also, you'll get used the cold. Winter is probably my favorite season (although I am a native Midwesterner). Best of luck with your decision and congrats on two great options.
