Sage friends-

Can you undo an AMCAS submission?

Let's hypothesize that one were to receive word that he was an "extraordinarily strong applicant for the Early Decision Program" at a school on his list...but he's already submitted AMCAS. To pursue the early decision option, can he slow/stop the AMCAS, as is necessary under Early Decision?

Thanks for any advice.

Sadly, under AMCAS guidelines, there is no way to retract your AMCAS app after the All-mighty Submit Button has been clicked.

If you want to, you could write a Letter of Intent to the school that you're extraordinarily strong for in the EDP. That might help.

Who, what, etc. gave you the idea that EDP was the 'sure-fire' way to go? An Adcom? A website? Be careful of your source of information. Adcoms and interviewers can say and tell you that you're the next best thing to Gold, and reject you the next day. FYI. This process can be misleading. Goodluck. :luck: 👍

i think if you log back into AMCAS and click on the "designate medical schools" button you can still edit those. I think you can change from "regular MD" to EDP. Its just the coursework, post-secs, essay, and tests you can't edit once AMCAS is submitted.

I was under the impression, as DrThom said, that you can edit your school list at any time.

hmmm... that's probably true. The editing school list part.

However, un-submitting is probably still out of the question.

yeah, but I think the editing you can do is only to add additional schools...I could click EDP on every school I apply to but isn't the whole deal with EDP that you can only apply to one school till you have the decision in Oct.? I'm curious how/where you got this encouragement, and would also be wary, more than one person makes the final decision, but I think you're SOL...

Come to think of it, really, just celebrate being such a great candidate where you want to go and chill - the school will understand that you were responsible and proactive enough to submit AMCAS super early, and you won't be penalized during the regular decision process....

Thanks guys.

I wrote AMCAS, too, and we'll see what they have to say.

The Director of Admissions at a SUNY school and I have had frequent correspondence over the past two years. She's familiar with my gpa and background, and when I asked her about EDP, she said a lot would depend on MCAT...I spoke with her about my score, and she gave me the impression that I should apply EDP.

Admittedly, this is nowhere near a promise nor an acceptance...I'm naive, but not foolish.

Thanks again.

I would advise against applying EDP. Regardless of your scores, the committee may find something else they don't like in your application and you may end up not getting accepted early decision. If that happens, you will be WAY WAY behind applying to other schools. I would just go through the application process as normal. If that school is your number once choice and you get in, GREAT! If you're concerned about money, don't be...you'll spend tons more as you continue your education...and good luck getting it back from AMCAS.

is october way way behind? i know SDN peeps are generally more neurotic, but from the "official admit" thread, it looks like almost noone is accepted until december-feb....

The last day for AMCAS is October 15th (I think), but most secondaries are due by December. However, 80% of AMCAS applications (old statistic, but it seems reasonable) are submitted by June 30.

it's true that most acceptances start coming out in late december/january, but those people are the ones who got their secondaries in in september and interviewed in october or november. if you apply early decision and don't get in, your schools won't even receive your PRIMARY application until october. so you get your secondary sometime in november and interview in january or february. don't expect the adcom to make a decision until a few months after that. when you add it all up, you will definitely be behind.

Sadly, you cannot "un-submit" your AMCAS or undesignate schools once you have submitted. I was in similar situation last year and asked AMCAS the same question. In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't get to apply ED, and I hope things will turn out for the better for you too. :luck:

Guys many folks do get accepted starting October 15th...if your stuff is in early and you sent back secondaries ASAP and you receive interviews you *can* get accepted October 15th just fyi.

FYI folks-

I emailed AMCAS regarding my concern; they were as ambiguous as expected. So I called them up. The bad news was delivered verbally...you may add schools, but cannot substitiute or delete once the application is submitted. So...off to the regular decision I go.

To the airlines, medical schools and hotels that will be getting my hard earned money, you're welcome (umm...assuming I get an interview or two...). To AMCAS, who has my money for the twenty schools I applied to before speaking with SUNY, you're welcome. And to the EDP students, good luck, and leave me some scholarship money.

Not cool.

(in yoda's voice) ah, in this one, the bitterness is strong.....

no biggee, you'll do fine. i know i'm sure as hell not looking foward to that $600 credit card payment to AMCAS next week :scared:

SD-

Yeah...I coughed up $720 - or $740...oh hell...it was a lot more than just one school!

I submitted my AMCAS on October 31st of last year, so I don't think the last day is the 15th. I think you can submit well into January, or at least until the deadlines for all the schools are up.

Wouldn't recommend submitting that late though. 😀

Yeah, I submitted AMCAS around Oct 25th so that I could make sure my August MCAT was good enough (not very good though). The school are the ones with the deadlines, not AMCAS. The latest AMCAS submission for my schools was December 15th I believe. I ended up with an acceptance, but I don't suggest applying with my MCAT or that late. I was told by the Dean of Admissions to apply. 🙂
