Has any one heard from UNC who is out of state? Congrats if so, and I'd love to know, just to see if I ought to toss that one into the "AMCAS donation" and at "least I don't have to write more essays" pile. Thanks!

Nothing here yet. Does anyone know what time UNC started to offer secondaries to out-of-state students last year?

I got a letter saying they have my application, are reviewing it, and will ask for a secondary if I am invited for an interview (you only get asked to fill out a secondary if you have already been selected for an interview - strange, I know). They also said there were very small out of state numbers, blah blah. I got the letter just a week ago, so I'm hoping to hear something else soon.

Not to discourage you but I got that letter in July...

When was your AMCAS processed? I haven't received such a letter yet.

I've heard that the UNC out-of-state screen is around 3.6/34ish.
Based upon mdapplicants.com, the numbers you have quoted may be the average, but they are probably not strict cutoffs.

Getting into UNC out-of-state is getting more competitive.
Good point. I should have considered that possibility. By the way, where did you get those numbers from?

hi,

To be considered in-state in NC, should one have lived in NC for atleast 12 months prior to the "date of Application" or the "date of beginning of classes"? So, if I am not a resident in June '05 when I apply but become a resident in November '05, would I be considered in-state for admission and tuition purposes?

Thanks!

You can try sending a PM to Swiper as I'm sure that he knows the answer to this.

I can answer this having just dealt with it.

You apply as an in-state resident even if you haven't been living there a year (just a year before classes start, I filled out the application as an in-state resident even though I'd only had a permanent address in NC for a 1 month...but I'd been going to college there for 4 years before that). You have to fill out a very long form that details whether or not you're a NC resident. When they offer you an interview (or right after the interview) they will tell you that although you are not officially an in-state resident but for admissions purposes you will be considered as such.

Then, if you are accepted, you have to modify the in-state application form that they originally sent you to become eligible for in-state tuition. You have to modify it because on this application you list specific dates for income taxes, addresses, and such. Then Ms. Randee Reid gives her stamp of approval and you get a super nice tuition.

If you have specific questions feel free to PM me.

Here is the Graduate School link discussing "NC Residency for Tuition Purposes." You can scroll down to the "Long Residency Form" to get an idea of what (i.e. register to vote, register your car, etc.) you'll need. This form is a bit different than that provided last year by the med school (which I think was 4 pages) but it's the same general idea.

twinklz is right on. Especially the part about the super nice tuition.

A few weeks later...have any out-of-state applicants received the secondary/interview invite from UNC?
