Hey y'all! UNC c/o 2006 here... Congratulations on being Tar Heels (I know that pains our NCSUcks friend on this thread)! I don't hang out around this site too often, but if you've got some questions, which is seems like you do, feel free to email me (
[email protected]).
As for the living situation... There are plenty of places to live near campus and near the dental school, but renting in Chapel Hill can be a pain because real estate is waaaaay overvalued. I've rented for four of the six years I've been in Chapel Hill, but looking back, I probably should have bought a place my junior year of undergrad. However, it's tough to find anything to buy "near campus" that's on the market for less than about 5 times what it's actually worth.
I live in an apartment with three other guys in my class about a mile from the school. We each pay a little over $400/month. We ride our bikes to class everyday and really enjoy the location. If you live within two miles of campus, you're not eligible for a parking pass, so keep that in mind, too. Anything further than a mile can seem like a reeeeeal long walk/ride at 7:30 in the morning when it's 20 degrees and there's ice on the ground. However, Chapel Hill has an excellent (and FREE -- I guess that's one of the advantages of living in this pseudo-socialist town) bus system that I would guess at least 50% of the people in my class use on a daily basis. Most of the places withing walking/biking distance are actually houses, duplexes, or small apartment complexes, so I don't really have too many specific recommendations, though I can suggest some areas (street names, etc.) that would be convenient.
Alrighty, I might actually try to be academic and do a little studying tonight, so if you'd like to know more than this lame, umbrella post provided, just email me!
