Has anyone out there applied to UNC-med school. I am an undergrad sophomore now and it is my dream to go there. Any advice I get to get in would be greatly appreciated. 😀

You're a North Carolina resident, right? If not, it's pretty much impossible to get in as an out-of-state resident. I think they have a great program. I'm pretty sure they're H/P/F for the first two years. I can't be much help, I'm afriad, as I'm out-of-state and only looked at the school long enough to realize that it was probably impossible for me to get in.

Get good grades, ace the MCAT, and get some clinical/research experience. Pay attention to the other UNC threads around here and you'll learn more about how to get in.

First year was just changed to P/F only (no more honors,) no word yet if that will continue with this year's class into second year.

I think they must take a decent number of out-of-state students (for a state school) because I applied there, but I can't find the exact numbers though. I am sure it is tough, but worth a shot anyway.

I had a friend who was accepted to unc out of state w/ a 13-15v/11/11 / 3.78 gpa... went to Africa for social work etc.

Carebear I don't know if you meant why it's my dream to go to UNC, but if you did it is becasue I grew up in NC and my mom used to worked in the biology department on their campus and I just fell in love with it. It is my first choice school and where I really want to go.

well, then good luck to you. i just wanted to make sure you had visited and and seen the school (and the town 🙂 ) for yourself before deciding it was your dream.

i see that you are a black female. . .well so am i 🙂

our SNMA chapter has a program going on where undergrad premed students from several triangle area schools can sign up for a 'big buddy' at unc som, and can get advice abt the admissions process/college in general. . .i'm not sure what undergrad organization organizes it, or what school you are at, but if you're interested you can PM me and i will get you more details.

also, if you're not looking for something that formal, we also host 'coffee nights' once a semester i think, or maybe once a year, that basically have the same purpose as the mentoring program but is open to anyone. a panel talks about med school at unc, and getting into med school at unc.

well, i honestly wish you the best of luck. unc is a good school although chapel hill is not my favorite place, but i have slowly adjusted to it 🙂 hopefully i will get to go to DC this summer to do research 🙂

if you have any other questions about unc throughout this year, you can feel free to PM me. take care starseeker~

edit: i went back and read that you are a sophomore. there is plenty you can do to get in! i would recommend applying to the MED program, which is a summer program for minority students, a 6 or 8 week 'taste' of medical school. most of the people who do it are still in undergrad, and some actually do it the summer before med-school as a sort of pre-matric. program. i never did the program, but i hear rave reviews about it. you would get to know administration and maybe future students very well (honestly, in my class i think that OVER HALF the black students participated in MED at some point- a lot of them knew each other from the program before starting school, which was great for them! (a little isolating for those who didn't know anyone, but that's another topic 🙂 )

i think the biggest advantage of doing a program like that in undergrad, though, is that you REALLY find out whether you want to do the whole med. school thing. so many people have starry eyes abt med school and are shocked when confronted with piles of material to learn first semester (i know i was.) so if you can experience a program that gives you a glimpse of what it is really like, i think you will be off to a great start when you finally matriculate.
enough from me. . .take care!

Thanks carebear for the great advice. I have heard about the MED program from my mom's gynocologists whose wife works in admissions. I am seriously considering doing it this summer. I also am interested in the big buddy program. Any information you can give me about it would be super. Thanks a million. 😀

You can also apply for "Summer Program For Future Doctors" at ECU....same sort of stuff and equally FUN..... 🙂

I am a senior in NC at WCU who has applied to Chapel Hill. Could you tell me what it is about Chapel Hill that you don't like, and also any other relevant information? I haven't heard from Chapel Hill since I sent in my application in August, but my MCAT scores haven't been sent yet, so I'm hoping I'll hear something soon. Thanks for any information you can give.

As per other people, the admissions office is seriously running late with secondary stuff ...... so don't worry if you don't hear from them for a while...

Hi..Thought I would pm you. I live in Durham (near 54/55). I am gonna take April 05 MCAT and apply next year. UNC is definitely my first choice too. I hope it works out for you when you apply. When are you planning to take MCAT?

I have a friend, she just finished med school at UNC and she is doing Emergency Medicine Residency at UNC now. Even though it was convenient for her to stay in the triangle, but she told me that if she had to choose again, she would choose ECU over UNC. Not sure exactly why...but I guess ECU has smaller class size.

Take care and have a good day.
