Hi guys,

Did anyone get accepted to UNC-Chapell Hill medical school as an out-of-state applicant? I am strongly considering it, but I am a NJ resident. Is it really difficult?

Thanks.

Several outofstaters from the ECU/UNC thread (you should look at it) got accepted, but it's not easy. Here are the admissions stats for Fall 2004 from USNews:

Applied Interviewed Accepted Enrolled
Total: 2,972 593 217 160
In-state: 774 490 178 137
Out-of-state: 2,198 103 39 23
Women: 1,501 276 107 75
Minorities: 1,015 159 59 47
International: 215 27 12 9

Good luck!

i was an out of state applicant. (NY)
but my family lives in NC.
yes, it is *much* harder as an out of stater, but clearly not impossible.
after the first year u can get instate costs too.

i got in off the waitlist.
i also just got instate status too, but i do not think the 2 are related, maybe. i was told that once you are categorized as an out of state applicant it stays like that the whole application cycle. chapel hill has different waitlists for instate and out of state.

if you *really* *really* want to go to chapel hill, as an out of stater, it is quite beneficial to move down south asap. there are a plethora of medically realted jobs here with unc and duke and research triangle park. this way you can establish your residency and get an awesome deal on tuition. (and escape northeast winters.)

you need to have lived in nc for 1 year to gain residency. it is also possible to change residency status mid year (between semesters).

pm me if you have specific questions. be glad to help!

Thank you so much for your replies guys. I know UNC is a great school. My boyfriend graduate from UNC law school in 2003, and really loved it there. Unfortunately, the odds seem to be against me. My numbers are really not very competitive, especially if I am an out-of state application. They probably only interview/accept people with incredible stats. And besides my bf going to law school there, I really have no connection to NC. I guess it is a no-go for me! 🙁

I applied to UNC as an out-of-stater. I tried to get instate status b/c my mother lives and works there as well as my brother and sister-in-law, who additionally own a business in NC. I also still have a NC driver's license, because I used to live in NC. After months of trying though, they never granted me instate status. As an out of stater, I didn't even get an interview (34, 3.7 gpa, Ivy school, very good ECs and Recs). So it's definitely difficult, but if your stats are really good you can get in. I agree with previous post. Move down there for a year to gain residency. In state is much easier to get in.

Well you have incredible stats, and still no interview? Now I REALLY know I dont have a chance!!! I also went to an Ivy and have good ECs and recs, but my GPA and MCAT scores are not as high as yours. Oh well, I guess I saved primary and secondary application money! 🙂

i applied to UNC as a Georgia resident and I was not offered an interview either.

35s MCAT, 3.7 GPA, Ivy undergrad, parents live in NC, sister is NC resident, sister attends UNC School of Public Health and was the director of the Student-run health clinic that is run jointly by the medical, public health, and social work schools.

good luck. but i would call and ask if you'll just be throwing your money away. you can make an anonymous call, and theyll tell you straight up if you have a shot.

Thanks for your reply. I think a phone call would be a waste of money (or minutes) too because they would just tell me not to apply. 🙂 It's ok though. Congratulations on all your acceptances. You have some really great choices!
