I noticed that UNC-Charlotte offers a PhD in Health Psychology (clinical). Does anyone have any insight into this program? Anyone apply or interview there? It looks nice on paper, but I realize it is not APA accredited yet.

Thanks so much!

I went for an interview and was accepted but declined the offer. It's a new program.. I believe it started about 8 years ago. The faculty are all (at least the 6 or 7 I met) very nice, seem very smart, and seem very driven to get the program off the ground. They're expecting an APA site visit in the next few months and hope to be accredited within the next year. They really downplayed the accreditation point during the interview day.

The funding is not great. I believe that they're able to get a modest stipend and tuition remission for most, if not all, of their students, but it's not guaranteed like other programs. The building is also very old. I'd say if you find a mentor you think you could work with, give it a try. Especially if the APA accreditation process moves along this year as they expect. Good luck!

I have a similar question about another program. I really like the program at Mercer University, but it is a new program. I think they will be a accredited, but wanted to know what people think about going to a program that is not yet accredited. I have seen a lot on this topic, but mostly about PsyD programs and schools that accept a lot of applicants. Less about the schools that are just...new. I mean they have to start somewhere right? I wish Clinical Psychology programs were more like Medical Schools in that they deal with accreditation before they accept the first class.

I wouldn't go to a school that isn't accredited. You have no way of guaranteeing that they will get accredited, so I'm not sure what makes you "think" that they are going to. If you enroll in a program thinking it's going to get accredited and then it doesn't, your chances of getting a good internship will be slim to none.
