I've heard a couple peoples remarks about UNC and their dental school not living up to expectations and I would just like to say I caught the wrong end of the stick when I got an email from Certiphi yesterday saying I had been conditionally accepted from a dental school and almost a day later received an email from UNC saying it was sent out by mistake. As if the up and down's of waiting from hearing on dental school decisions isn't enough stress... I have yet to be accepted anywhere and probably won't be since I have only a 3.0 undergrad GPA and 20AA on the DAT (which is why I involved myself in a master's program). I already accept that... However, what UNC did, and the fact that they have done it last year, and the year before, and the year before that with their mistakes concerning Certiphi have only solidified my feelings about UNC and their admissions office. I thought I saw the light and it turned out to be temporary.

Until then, I'm keeping my head up and pushing on and I hope anyone else who received the same set of emails does the same. I would just warn that if the base isn't strong then the house crumbles... and if UNC can't fix a simple problem or completely disregards it because its a problem for those who aren't even accepted then anyone who is considering UNC I would hope possibly takes this post into consideration, even if you were accepted.

HAD TO VENT... 😡

Whom are you trying to kid? If you received an acceptance, you might hesitate for less than a heart beat.

Yeah IF you receive an acceptance. I did not, and I'm not disagreeing with you but it IS a thought for anyone who has been accepted to multiple schools (including UNC) and might want to take it into consideration. Its been going on for 3 years now (according to older SDN posts) and most would like to assume an institution like UNC with program like dental school would avoid those types of errors. I've also heard those invited for interviews were a bit disappointed after visiting UNC. Obviously, another subjective statement but maybe the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. If I were the dean of admissions at any dental school I would be sure to treat both accepted and denied students with at least some sort of consistency and respect. What if I was considering reapplying to UNC, will the school's image be the same the second time around for me?

There is not a schools in the country that is going to make everybody happy. Anyone choosing a school based on sdn innuendos is simply easily swayed.

Yeah. I'm a bit confused as to how or why your trying to justify an accidental email saying I had been accepted and then UNC saying it was an accident. People do come to this network for insight, which I'm sure you'd like to agree with since you have 5000+ posts. And since this is a forum that is all about that type of input, I think it is fair on my part to voice my opinion about a certain school. It's up to whoever reads my post, or your 5000+ posts, to use that information however they want when making a decision about a school or school related matter. Why limit your sources if you can find some positive consistencies or foreseeable problems in a program that might help make your decision easier after visiting the school.

You are correct though, there is no school that can make everyone happy BUT every single school albeit medical, dental or pharm should be professional and proficient in its communication and application processes, especially with prospective students regardless of whether they are accepted or denied.

This is disgusting I'm really sorry for you, you must have told your whole family/friends you were accepted... Cant believe it. Really unprofessional.
I once misread an email title and got so pumped up only discovering few seconds later it wasnt a good new... Felt awful so I imagine you felt even worse...
Keep your head up and continue working hard and I'm sure you will get in and in a better school! (dont know much about that school tbh I study in Canada and never tried us schools)

thanks Flyingsky. I really appreciate your thoughts and positive input. I did tell everyone in my family but my mom because I wanted it to be a christmas surprise. It's finals week in my graduate program so I'm doing my best to keep my chin up but I can't deny that it was a heart breaker. Until I hear from any other schools I'm going to push on with the assumption I'm not going to get in this cycle, and with the motivation of ace'ing my finals in this master's program so that when next cycle comes around, I'll be the competitive applicant that I aspire to be. It's been a very tough road because of an accident that resulted in my ability to recalling information during my first 2 years of undergrad. However, it's been 4 years now and after the rehab, the hard work in school as an undergraduate, and the countless hours towards my DAT, my current involvement in a master's program will hopefully give me the break I've been waiting for.

Believing a Certiphi e-mail about a ds acceptance is on par with believing that you have a rich uncle in Nigeria that has left a lot of money that is yours for the asking. UNC did the "professional" thing by sending you a notification of the mistaken identity. Incidentally, making negative comments on a forum about ds/future colleagues does not qualify as "professional".

Yeah the UNC admissions office is getting very low marks from a lot of people this year...Read the thread.

Not that it's related...But reminds me, the UNC undergrad office sent out 3,000 acceptance emails mistakenly back in 2007.

It's unprofessional giving feedback about a school with an actual, repetitive problem? Maybe the problem is because people keep their mouths shut rather than voicing their opinions when their is an actual problem... Dispersion of responsibility maybe? I'm almost certain the Dean of a prestigious dental program would like to hear any type of feedback to better their program and I think it's very fair for me express how I feel with other's who might have gone through the same thing.

Toothache, how are you someone working as a professional yet hesitant to voice your opinion albeit positive or negative if there is an actual problem. Are all your 5000+ posts positive statements? Or are they all unsupportive and dissecting to your "future" fellow colleagues?

And yes Toothache, I jumped to an unfortunate conclusion that by God's grace I might have gotten a chance at dental school because of an email from an official company that DOES background checks of accepted students for a majority of the dental schools I applied to. Shame on me. However, there was enough fact to my belief vs. your completely unrelated comment about my uncle in Nigeria having money for the taking. You want fact as to why I believed Certiphi?

"This email is sent upon receipt of the FIRST Acceptance for a single applicant.

Please Note: Only the first admissions action triggers the email. From the email the applicant will know if they were initially accepted by at least one school, but will NOT know through this email whether or not subsequent acceptances have occurred.

You have received this email because you have been conditionally accepted by one or more of the schools participating in the ADEA-facilitated program for performing criminal background checks on conditionally accepted applicants"

Hard not to believe.

Whether you want to accept it or not feedback either progresses the good, or hopefully fixes the bad. Any type of feedback is professional and justifiable if called for. And according to yet another source like Seahawk (thank you), UNC does have a problem that should be addressed.

The intention of my original post was to share my experience. Period. I stand behind my opinion and my negative feedback about UNC. It's fair, justifiable and professional to share my experience with my "future" colleagues if its a problem worth noting. I'd be disappointed if there was a problem that a "fellow" colleague never shared with me.

Interesting. I go to UNC and haven't experienced a problem. I doubt people have not been impressed with the school based on the new building and the fact that I have gone to all of the interview events and people seem to have enjoyed the visit. Then again, when I applied to UNC, their interview was the toughest for me and I could see an "I'm not impressed" attitude coming from those who had the same experience since they assume they are not getting in. As far as admissions, don't know anything about that...I always had a good experience with the admissions office here. Hopefully it's just a fluke. Many schools have made mistakes with inadvertently sending out admissions letters though, if not all schools. Shouldn't deter you, though, if you are to be accepted here. Plus our entire curriculum is being revamped and improved currently which is pretty awesome. Good luck this cycle.

Oh, I just saw this post. I'm sorry man, this doesn't look like an acceptance to me. You wouldn't initially find out by Certiphi for one...and it seems to me like anything, that this is the way Certiphi interprets and conducts their process once they receive the request from the school, and many schools use this company; Not any fault of the dental school. Conditional acceptance is just that, anyway, not an acceptance. Hope it still turns out to be for you. Good luck.
