Hey guys,

I just received an email from a Carolyn Oakes (UNC admissions assistant) about my scheduled interview for the 20th of September.

I was just wondering if anybody else has received this invite and how they are going to get to UNC and where they plan on staying.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Congrats. I also got one today for September 20th as well. I will be flying there.

Yea I received my email today as well. I go to Chapel Hill so if you have any travel questions, hotel questions, etc. just let me know.

Yeah, I have a quick question. Where would you suggest staying when I get down to the university. Thanks for your help.

Umm there are a couple hotels like Days Inn and Holiday Inn like 5-10 off campus on the main roads that I hear are fine and they are in good parts of town (try not to stay in Durham, NC if you can help it). Also, there's actually a lot of construction going on at the dental school right now so allow yourself plenty of time. Last thing, parking is going to suck on that Saturday because there is a home football game against Va. Tech....I suggest asking the school if they have a parking lot for you (I'll just be parking at one of my friends).

Anything else, just ask...

Oh yea, and congratulations to both of yall 👍

....I need to do there supp already, ive been slacking, then hopefully ill see you there! ha

Do any of you know if both VCU and UNC wait until they receive your committee letter for interview invites? Also have all of you called the dental schools you are applying to in order to make sure all of your application material has been received. I am kind of nervous to call since most schools say just wait for the AADSAS update, but AADSAS is so far behind it seems like, or schools just really don't comply with filling in the status bar. My committee letter has been received by AADSAS and they gave me a Sept 2nd send out date. Do you think most of the schools are waiting on the LOR's before they award interview invitations?

I'm not sure about the specific of each school's admissions process, but I'm fairly certain that most schools wait until an applicant's application is complete (i.e. DAT scores, AADSAS, LORs, fees, and supplemental applications). I'm know that there are exceptions to this, but I think it is a general trend among the schools to the best of my knowledge.

I have also heard that some schools do award interview invites that will be canceled if the application is not complete by the interview date. I'm not positive about this though so take this information with a grain of salt.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

Hey guys.. I too was offered an interview to UNC Sept 20, hope to see all of you there.. does anyone have the guide book handy and could tell me what their stats are as far as the # of in-state/out-of-state applicants they actually accept?
Also, what time is the social event on Friday the 19th?

Thanks! 🙂

Congrats paul! I'll see you guys on the 20th too! I'll be flying in... flight's already been booked... now I just have to find a hotel 🙂.

Social event is at 6:30 - I asked Carolyn this morning when I called to confirm the interview. And as far as the stats for acceptance... that, my friend, is just a few clicks away on the UNC dental website.

I can give you a figure that isn't very quantitative: out of state acceptance percentage = very very low.

For all of you out-of-staters interviewing on Sept 20:

As TarHeelKid has already mentioned, hotels are filling up fast already due to the home football game that weekend, so I'd recommend booking a room ASAP, unless you either a) want to pay out your ass for a hotel that Friday night, or b) want to pitch a tent on the UNC campus. Both options suck, so get on it!

Those stats are available off the UNC website under "student profiles," I think.

Flying down to UNC, PSU SHC 414? Wow, I'm probably gonna be driving down. That'll be a rough weekend...

Driving down? I'm from Philly which is about a 9 hour drive or so....good luck with that!...

Oh yea...don't forget to check out the whole UNC campus...it truly is a very nice place to spend 4 years...

see you all there on the 20th!!

Yeah... it's going to put a dent in the bank account, but I had to drive down to Duke for my sis's graduation a few months ago, and believe me when I say that that was an absolutely miserable drive. I think we spent more time on the road (roundtrip) than we did at the graduation... and I had to drive in pouring rain on the way back... that experience was enough to convince me to burn the $150 by flying.

If you're still set on driving, I'd definitely recommend leaving on Thursday so that you have time to unwind once you get down there... if you're hardcore, though, I guess you could leave really early Friday morning and still get down there in time for the social...

Hey guys I was just wondering if many in-state applicants beside TarheelKid24 had heard anything. On pre-dents I noticed most of the interview so far are for out of state applicants and I was wondering if any other applicants from NC had received an interview and are not on pre-dents. thanks

Where did you get the airline tickets? I've been looking so that I can avoid that miserable drive that you talked about, but I haven't found any roundtrip for $150.

Thanks for the info

I noticed that too about the out-of-state students....I haven't talked to anyone here at UNC either that received an interview. Hope I'm not the only North Carolinian..

hey..i haven't heard either. i called the 21st to check on my status and it was under review..so hopefully we'll hear fairly soon

Compared to what is it nice? Because I've crossed some schools off my list just because of the weather and UNC was one of them. I heard it's like 100% humidity down there, in addition to the heat I constantly associate southern states with, that is.

I guess compared to any place with snow? (which we never get down here). And being from up north, the people down here are just all-around friendlier...

but I am glad you crossed UNC off because it's too hot...good reasoning

Haha, yeah, I liked that reasoning too. Who cares if it's a top 5 dental school?

Honestly, although weather should be and is a factor for most dental school applicants it shouldn't be the be all and end all of the decision making process. Other things like quality of school and friendliness of faculty and staff should weigh more heavily on the decision than how warm the weather tends to be.

Southwest... booked it right on their website. I also checked sites like travelocity and expedia... Southwest still had the cheapest flights into Raleigh/Durham. If you're flying out of State College, it might be pretty hard to find a roundtrip for around $150. You'll probably have to drive to Philly or Pittsburgh.

I'm flying out of Philly... tickets were around $160 after taxes and government fees.

:laugh::laugh: ... K90... I can't believe you crossed UNC off your list just b/c of weather. Aside from the fact that you're going to dental school (where you'll be spending the majority - i.e. 99.8% - of your time face deep in a book studying in a library or study lounge) and not planning a vacation, every location is going to have its trade-offs and I honestly don't think NC is half bad at all...

I realise you were being sarcastic with the 99.8% of the time, but only the top five to ten schools do that, and UNC isn't even near that last I looked.

And yes, I guess I do agree weather is something silly to cross a school off for, but I think I'll take my chances with the other schools rather than frying in an oven and worrying about getting hit by more hurricanes than Florida. Schools like that are in my eyes, a last resort, no offense.

Which hotel are you guys staying at?

UNC isn't one of the top 10 dental schools in the country?

Wow, I thought it was pretty close to the top of the list. Guess I was wrong.

Lemme know when you can post that list of top ten schools. I'd be interested to see it. Here's a list I found. It has UNC as the third-ranked institution in terms of NIDCR funding: http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/GrantsAndF...ons/RankListingAcademicInstitutionsFY2007.htm

As for in-state/out of state, lots of the outer-staters end up coming for the first date. I was an in-stater for the first date.
