Anyone know anything about this program? I was approved for a secondary today. I'm interested in pursuing my PhD in public health, which is why I applied to UNC, but I know very little about it otherwise.

Hi Morozovo,

I'm applying to the UNC MD/PhD program as well, although I'm pursuing a PhD in Neurobiology/Neuroscience. As a North Carolinian, I can tell you that UNC is a wonderful place to be for medicine and research. You probably already know a lot about their Public Health program, but in terms of medical education, I don't think you can get a much better education than at UNC. Although not in a big city, a lot of the bigger cases get pushed through UNC or Duke....I could go on and on, but if you have any questions about the area, I can answer it for the most part.

OT, why a PhD in Public Health rather than MPH. UNC has a very popular md/mph program as well.

I'm definitely interested in getting an MPH, but I am serious enough about the research side that I think a PhD would be more appropriate. (Of course, that depends on whether or not I can get into a program. There seem to be so few places that will support an MD/PhD in something other than the traditional biomedical sciences. In fact, the majority of my apps were to regular MD programs at schools with strong PH schools, not MD/PhD programs.)

Also, though this sounds strange, one of the reasons I applied MD/PhD to UNC is because I consider myself to be a stronger applicant as MD/PhD... I have a lot of research experience, but very little clinical/volunteer experience... I honestly don't know if I would have gotten a secondary as a regular MD applicant!

Just out of curiosity, do you know if it is a big deal to receive a secondary from UNC's MD/PhD program? I'm trying to assess the strength of my app after getting my first MD/PhD rejection yesterday...

I can't make any comment about the number of secondaries UNC sends out, but being a great school, I would assume receiving a secondary is a big deal.

I do think UNC likes to see community involvement/patient care especially since it is so strong in the patient care field. Sorry I can't be more of a help, maybe someone else who's been through the application cycle can chime in?

Hi Morozovo,

I'm a UNC MD/PhD student, and I'm getting my PhD from SPH (Health Policy).

1. MD/PhD admission decisions are done in collaboration with the medical school, but they are done by a separate MD/PhD committee. They are generally quite understanding that MD/PhDs often have less clinical experience or community involvement than MD applicants. Some of us have very extensive clinical experience and others substantially less so.

2. I don't remember how selective UNC is in giving out secondaries for MD/PhD. As UNC pays all expenses for interview weekends, getting an interview offer means we're pretty serious.

Not sure what else you would like to know, but please let me know if you have any questions!

Ditto what mrsanator said... I'm also a UNC MD/PhD'er. As for secondaries, we're not all that selective, for whatever that's worth. The big cut is between application and interview: from 250-300ish to 40-50 to interview.

Has anybody heard anything from UNC about interviews yet? We should be hearing back about now.

I was just thinking the same thing. They said we should know by the holidays, right?

I really want to know so I can go ahead and schedule my Duke interview at the same time.

Yeah, they said that they would send e-mails out before the December holiday period. I checked last year's md/phd interview thread and people got interview invites on November 27th.

Okay cool.. given that the 27th is Thanksgiving this year, I won't get my hopes up for any news before Monday...

I got my UNC MSTP rejection in the mail today.

Sigh.

Sorry guys. I'll let you know if (when?) I get the letter, too...

Reeeejected. So it goes.
