Hi!
I just got a formal invitation from UNC for an interview on the 22nd. I am extremely happy about it.
They also enclosed an invitation to attend an informal meeting on the 21st. They said there would be applicants and current dental students, and that we should feel free to ask them questions. I found this really great, and I was surprised because the other schools I have been invited to interview at did not offer such an opportunity.
If any of you guys have attended such informal meetings, please let me know how it went. Also, I do not know what I should be wearing to this meeting. I do not want to be too formal, but am afraid to appear too casual as well🙂
At UNC, they encouraged us to take our family members to tour the school and to attend the financial aid / info meeting on the day of the interview. As only one of my family members (my husband) lives here in the US, I am planning to take him to the meeting / interview.
Is this really common? Do you think it is a good idea?
Please let me know what you think, and I would appreciate any info on the interview process at UNC.
Hope to hear from you soon!

Maria,

Hey, congratulations on your interview at UNC. I can tell you some things about it. During my interview, there were roughly 60-70 interviewees. You can probably expect the same. Some in-staters and some out of staters (me). The dress code is definitely formal. Every guy was in a suit and every woman was wearing a suit or something similar. Put it this way. I almost did not wear a suit and I would have been the only one.

I was not able to make it to the reception the evening prior to interview day. I didn't hear anything about it either. During the interview, you will have one interview with a student. It really isn't an interview. Just a question and answer session really. You can ask them anything. My student luckily had a good knowledge of the school and she was easy to talk to.

I did bring a guest too. I would say that maybe 15-20 percent of us had guests. They can sit in on everything except the interviews, naturally. It is nice though, because they are there for support and reassurance that you are ready.

My impression was the the interviewers were not out to get you. They really wanted to learn about you. They will, however, ask you some good questions pertaining to your motivation, experience, and many others, but it is pretty relaxing.

Also Maria, don't let the low costs of a UNC Dental education make you believe it is inferior to other schools. I have seen others around the country and UNC is my first choice. It is really awesome. Good luck with your interview and if you have any more questions, pm me.
