I'm debating whether to send back my secondary to UNC. Do they accept many out-of-staters? At this point I'm wondering if I should just save the money I'd spend on the secondary app fee and the interview expenses (apparently if you get a secondary you get an interview too).

They show a heavy preference for NC residents.

Although the class is large....

Twenty-some out-of-state people got in last year.

Take care.

Thanks for passing along these numbers. I'll keep that in mind.

oooh, ATPase when did you get the secondary? That is a nice accomplishment. I'm out of state too, but I haven't heard anything. I almost forgot I applied there!

I go to Duke, and we have a saying: "The first rejection letter most applicants get is from UNC." A lot of people going to Duke undergrad, but who are from out-of-state, apply to UNC because it's right down the street. Almost everyone gets turned away as soon as the check is cashed.

according to 2004-2005 MSAR they interviewed 103 out-of-staters and 17 matriculated for the 2002-2003 entering class. hope that helps.🙂

Yes!!! You should absolutely send in the secondary!!!
UNC is incredibly choosy about the out-of-staters they interview. I believe in past years, it's been something like 100 out of 2300 applicants. And they accept 30-40 out of staters (to obtain a class of 15-20 out of state matriculants) . . . so your odds at this point aren't too bad, especially if you show lots of interest in the school and in North Carolina.

Last year, the 2ndary guaratneed you an interview........you're in good odds when you get to that point I'm guessing. But yeah, I know a lot of people now at great med schools who didn't even get an interview at UNC. Good luck.

Thank you all for responding - I guess I'll give it a shot. I probably shouldn't close any doors for myself since I haven't gotten an acceptance yet (although I'm hoping for one from UAB this week!) Waitlists really suck.

Lux, to answer your question - I just got the secondary last Friday. My AMCAS was transmitted to them back in July, so I was starting to think I wasn't going to hear anything at all. Good luck to you and hope you hear from them soon - 🙂

Ironically, the dean of admissions to UNC Med was at our Life Sciences fair today...lol. (He was a pretty cool guy, btw).

He did say that they are now accepting more out-of-state applicants than ever and this number is likely to increase...so....good luck to you. It is a great school.

I have heard this as well. However, Duke alumni usually make up the second largest undergrad group attending UNC(with UNC being first, obviously).

On a side note, if you go to Duke for a MD/MPH, you actually get the MPH from UNC.

Take care.
