hey everyone,

I'll be heading to UNC next year. My fiance and I are here in NC, working now until August... we're thinking of buying a house, but we don't really know where to look. Is buying a house a crazy idea??

1. Where do ppl who buy houses (or condos or townhouses) live?
2. If you have an apt and take the bus, where do you live?

I live off of HWY 54 on the other side of I 40 from Southpoint. There are apartments over here for pretty cheap. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the park and ride, which I then take the Chapel Hill bus to school. That is how professors and students get to school that lives off campus.

never a bad deal, i bought about 8 minutes from the school. You can get real value further away from the school / ie outside chapel hill...but you also sacrifice equity growth by NOT tapping into the hotter neighborhoods.

Do it right and you might be able to pay for MOST of your school loans with the equity gain you see on a house...(CLearly you have to buy a big house in a hot neighborhood...which is expensive) but it is possible.

Expensive proposition in chapel hill...it's hard enough to take out loans for dschool and then pay another 500k+ for that kind of house.

I'm poking around real estate websites trying to make this same decision. Anyone communte from Pittsboro, or living in married student housing? Is it impossible to get a parking permit if you live off of the busline?
